Best apples this time of year

We love local apples, fresh off the trees in the fall. This time of year I find it hard to get any that are really good. Any suggestions as to types that are still tasty by summer. I bought Empire this week-they were OK. I also got some specialty apples that I can't remember the name, but they were mushy and tasteless.

I usually get empire but they have been so horrible lately I have been buying the bags of apple slices from Walmart. They seem to always be good.

Outside of fall, I stick w/ Cameo apples. Love them! Very crisp, not too tar, not too sweet. I hate a mealy, really sweet apple. Kroger has been having good deals for them all winter & spring, usually between .99 and 1.29. sometimes organic, sometimes conventional. They keep awhile in the fridge, too, so I can get enough to last me a while.

I just stop buying apples this time of year because I've not found any that are good. I've never seen Cameo ones, but will look for them. I find all the fruit this year isn't so great. All that's in the stores right now are tasteless oranges or apples. The grapes aren't bad.

Strawberries are in season so I switch from citrus to those. We have them sliced with angel food cake or just plain.

We buy whatever fruit is in season most of the time. Right now, it's strawberries and pineapple (not together). One of our local orchards has a list of when the different varieties of apples are at their peak, and what they are best for. We kind of follow that.

Strawberries won't be in season here until June, although I have seen some from the west coast. I have gotten good bananas and blueberries and some pears that ripen in a few days but I really miss apples. I also sometimes get decent oranges but it is hit or miss. I haven't seen Cameo apples either but I may ask about them.

I just bought a few Braeburn apples and they were pretty good. Last week I found some Granny Smith that were good. I also try to stick with fruit that is in season, but agree that fruit has not been great this year.

....I'd second the Braeburn apple choice. In my opinion...it blows away all other apples for out of hand eating....the juice literally explodes out of the apple.
