Barnyard: Rip off of The Lion King

Did anyone else see Barnyard? As the movie went on I kept thinking..."this looks familiar". I then realized the plotline is VERY similar to The Lion King.

Leader dies, son takes over (is not confident that he can do it and gives up), sworn enemy tries to rule land, son musters courage from sky ...etc. etc.

Honestly I was a bit surprised Disney didn't make a fuss over this film it was a total rip off of The Lion King. Did anyone else see it?

One more thing that bothered me was the male cows had utters Were they hermaphrodite cows??

Oh my god Robin! Those udders just kill me--what were the artists thinking? On males? They are actually the number one reason I don't want to see the movie (my kids do).

Interesting the story line follows Lion King so closely. You'd never know that was what the story would be from the commercials.

Re: Barnyard: Rip off of The Lion King

We saw this a couple of weeks ago. Or I should say Caroline and I only saw half of the movie - she was just talking too much through it that I had to take her out.

You're the second person I've heard that had difficulties with the udders! I didn't have any problems with them, but then didn't give it a thought about the males. I also didn't put together the Lion King similarities.

Re: Barnyard: Rip off of The Lion King

I kept thinking Lion King, too, but I came out of the movie really liking it. Although it had a similiar plot, I felt like it really was a different type of movie. My son, age 10, laughed so hard at points during the movie-I think this is why I liked it so much.

We saw it in my Mom's hometown and only paid 3.50 each to see the movie and got a free coupon for large popcorn by signing up on their website, so all in all it was a very inexpensive way to go to the movie. I guess when movies are cheaper, I don't feel so bad if they don't live up to my hopes. There's nothing worse than taking my son and paying 15.00 for both of us (not including snacks) to get into a movie we don't like.

I, too, was udderly confused by the male cows... , however I soon forgot all about it as I munched on my milk duds during the mooovie...(o.k., I'll stop now!)

Re: Barnyard: Rip off of The Lion King

Well, it could be said that Disney knocked off another story for the Lion King, I've heard that it was loosely based on Hamlet. So maybe Barnyard is also based on Hamlet.

Re: Barnyard: Rip off of The Lion King

I noticed the Lion King similarity but, being that it was a kid's movie - I wasn't too concerned that my DS (5) would notice the udders - which he didn't. We thought it was very funny and very well done.

Re: Barnyard: Rip off of The Lion King

I haven't seen it, but Disney can't really do anything even if it was a rip off of the plot. The only way they could really take action is if copyrighted songs or characters were used, and even then they would have no recourse if such characters were used in a parody way.

I guess there are only so many plots for kids movies. I will have to see it and see if I notice the similarities.

Actually, the Lion King is a ripoff of Kimba, the White Lion (an anime flick).

My mom said that, too. She and my aunts and uncles used to watch the Kimba TV show on Saturday mornings. She said it was a cute cartoon.

I thought Barnyard was cute, and it was a lot funnier than The Lion King. Almost every Disney movie is a ripoff of another story so you can't say that anything is a ripoff of Disney.

Well, if you read Joseph Cambell, you'll see that there are only a few mythical plots out there and they're all rip-offs of everything else.

It's a classical myth plot to have the son be wracked by guilt for the father's death, go into the wilderness, and then come back to assume the mantle of duty and authority.

But, I totally remember Kimba. I was tiny little, but I remember seeing it on a black and white TV!
