That was some tribute! How long did you run away for when you went to London?

Scott, I posted the utube link in this thread.

I was gone a little over a week. I was having a really bad time at home, so one day while my parents were at work, I took a non-revenue ticket (he worked for American Airlines) and a credit card out of my Dad's desk, emptied my savings account and headed to the airport. The original plan was to hang out in Dallas for a few days, but I needed to be somewhere further away from my mother. I called my Dad from DFW and told him I was going somewhere else, but didn't know where yet. He told me to keep him posted. I told myself that the next flight that popped up with room, I'd be on it. It was Heathrow. I hopped the flight and about halfway across the Atlantic, realized exactly the depth of the poo-poo I was in! As soon as I got off, I called home, forgetting the whole time difference thing, but Daddy was still up, waiting for me. He said, "Where are you?" and I said, " London? as in Heathrow?" {cricket} {cricket} {cricket} He said, "Well, at least you went somewhere you speak the language." WHEW!!! He made sure I did have the credit card and knew how to book a hotel and buy an Underground pass (which I did) and he told me to keep in touch on the phone card. I racked up the credit card and finally returned home with $4 to my name. About 3 weeks later, Daddy walked in my room while I was studying, gave me a huge hug and said, "It sure is nice to have you home, sweetheart." It was very warm and fuzzy...then, he put an envelope on my desk and said, "The payment is due on the 28th...don't be late! " and he walked out of my room. I had a $3,000 credit card bill that took me quite some time to pay off!

Scott, my Dad did REAL good. I wasn't angry about it or anything then or now. The way he handled it completely changed my life and how I parent my own kids. I think Randy's parents' actions were similar for him and his kids will be so much better for the legacy.

I was thinking about Jai and the kids this morning and how their lives have been forever changed by Randy's lecture and book and I wonder if she gets upset with the limelight that she never asked for.

OK, you just topped the story about Chandler ending up in Yemen (Friends). What a great story! Randy would be proud.

I'm still relatively new to these boards, but people who hang out at PassPorters seem to be the funniest, most interesting bunch! I am NEVER disappointed when I sign on!

OK, I think I found our first topic, thanks to GrayGables.

How about everyone share their best How I once acted like Randy story. That would be a fun way to get to know each other! I can't wait to hear what comes up!

I have another funny, sorta like Randy...we were in Dinoland and DDs REALLY wanted to win a dinosaur, so hubby and I paid for the four of us to play the whack-a-dino game. We whacked and whacked and hubby won both times. As we were leaving, my thumb REALLY started to hurt and I looked at it to find the entire pad was a ginormous blister (friction from the handle)! I sent hubby to the boneyard to play with DDs so I could go to first aid, with the first ever whack-a-mole injury. The nurse burst out laughing when I told her what happened and then apologized for which I told her it was perfectly OK to laugh, Lord knows I was about it (despite the pain...) At least my girls got their Dinos!!!

I believe I emulate Randy (although that is not my goal, it's just the way I am) by really being a kid at heart. I love having fun! I do not take life so seriously that I cannot have fun. To illustrate:

When the movie Happy Feet came out, I took my then 5 year old grandson to see it. It was his first theater experience, and he was mesmerized by the movie. As we walked out into the lobby after the movie, Tristan said, "Grammie, we should dance like Happy Feet!" I immediately agreed! The two of us danced wildly around the lobby, paying little attention to who might be watching. When we ended our dance with a flourish, we were met with a loud round of applause...the theater employees were all lined up at the candy counter watching Tristan & I. Undaunted, Tristan & I joined hands and bowed deeply. It is a wonderful memory...and if I had been afraid to appear as anything less than adult, I would not have this memory to cherish. Thankfully, Tristan remembers it too, and that makes it even greater.

Those are GREAT stories!!! Keep-em coming!

I LOVE Whack-a-mole! I just saw that game last night!

Happy feet dancing is an important part of life! One of the reasons I love working with little children so much is that they can get so excited and they haven't learned to control it. I love being around that kind of joy!

I guess my parenting style is very Randy-like. I've always let me kids make messes. I have many great memories of playing with DD and DS when they were little face/body painting, creating entire communities in the basement out of sheets, tables, boxes etc. One of my favorite times in the spa in the backyard. DS wanted to dig a whole in the backyard. They spent the entire day digging this big whole and then filled it with water. It was the nicest (and only) mud bath I've ever taken.

You can start by viewing the actual lecture (a link is someplace above). This is actually a topic that you can easily discuss without the book, because it is concepts and not necessarily plot lines. Besides, you have your hands full reading "Eat, Pray, Love".

I first heard about Randy Pausch here. Someone had posted a link to his Oprah appearance. I went from there to the youtube of the lecture. I found his website in the fall, and then "checked in" on him once or twice a week. I am almost done reading the book which was a birthday present from one of my DDs.
I will have to think of a way I thought I was doing something Randy-like.....
