If Mama Mia were filmed in Beijing

Just saw Mama Mia. It was cute-they were able to do much more on film than on Broadway.

The main thought I left with, though, was if Mama Mia were filmed in Beijing, Pierce Brosnan would have been lip synching. YIKES! Every tine he sang, the audience would break into that awkward stifled laughter that you see when people are trying to be kind. Maybe if they'd put his songs in a lower key, he would not have to strain so much.

Poor guy... I thought his singing was awkward, but there were a few others that were equally as bad... even some of Meryl's parts were sort of off "The Winner Takes it All" But the music has become our feel good music of the summer. The kids have been dancing around to ABBA and my 3 year old loves "Dancing Queen".

Some people have said that they should have had some of the characters lip sync but I think the fun of the movie was that they all sang...

I found the "Winner Takes it All" scene to be so touching, I didn't even notice the quality of the singing. That is one deeply sad song if you listen to the words.

Interesting I couldn't get into that one because of the singing...but I did like the one where she is helping her daughter get ready for the wedding - Slipping Through My Fingers(?). Maybe because I have 2 girls and one is going off to kindergarten so I was able to relate.

I was able to relate to that one also. Somehow it made me think of my step-daughters. When my oldest step-daughter married, her mother was dying of cancer. She and her mom danced together at the reception, and it was so very sad because we all knew time was running out very quickly. She must have held on a few months after the wedding.

My youngest step-daughter got married about a year later after her mother passed from cancer. I know that she really missed having her mother there for the plans and ceremonies, and I felt so sad that their Mom had to miss that day, as well as the birth of her two grandsons. That song was REALLY touching for me.

I loved the movie but I do agree that Pierce Brosnan's singing left something to be desired. I really love him, but let's face it, not everyone can sing.

I concur - Brosnan can't sing. But - I like that they all sang their own parts - and it made it more believable. (as if the whole story is really believable, but I'm just sayin'...)

I thought the bad singing was part of the movie's appeal. It was a little "cheesy" and not at all afraid to say so. His character wouldn't have been right if he'd had a wonderful voice.

I could tolerate Brosnan's singing much more than I could tolerate Meryl's overacting. I thought she ruined The Winner Takes it All.

Sorry when I read this topic I thought of that poor girl in China who can sing wonderfully but is too ugly for the spotlight. My prayers go out to here. I hope her outter beauty catches up with her soon. And actually I have seen a photo of her! She was not as cute as the girl who lip sinked, but she was not the "Elephant Girl!!!"" A sad siutation. Sorry this might be off topic--I will delete it if you want.

I quite agree Scott. I saw a picture of her too and I actually thought she was cute. Looked like her teeth were maybe bad? I am totally appalled that China did this, they definatly are not doing any of thier citizens any favors, all in the name of the Olympics.

That's China for you Scott, a communist country does things like adds fake fireworks to an opening ceremony, replaces a talented singer with one that looks nicer to them, calls the pollution in their air just fog, oppresses an entire nation of people under it, and plots to destroy the free world.

As far as Pirece Brosnan goes, I didn't see him in Mama Mia, but he did make a mean James Bond!

Not OT at all! That was what I was referring to when I made the post-my sarcasm does not always translate well into print!

That whole thing really dulled the glitter of my initial impression of the opening ceremony. At first I thought it was just the press stirring up trouble, but then the government made a VERY mean statement. When I saw the girl's pic-all I could think was how adorable she was. I can't even blame the Chinese, though, because we are just as bad with that shallow surface stuff.

I love Pierce Brosnan, and I enjoyed what he brought to that character. Lets just hope we never see James Bond, The Musical!

(Actually, I think if the music director lowered the score a bit so he did not have to strain, it would have been fine. Directors transpose or "tweak" notes all the time for the individual ranges of the singers.)
