I work for a movie theater, in box office usually. This weekend Ted and Magic Mike blew the competition out of the water. Friday night, every single showing sold out hours in advance - even with shows added! Saturday night was busy, but not insanely busy like Friday. Lots of ladies queued up for Magic Mike.

I took my 5yo DS to see Madagascar3 yesterday and there were 3 ladies at the ticket counter getting their tix to Magic Mike. The young man giving them their tickets jokingly told them not to throw any dollar bills at the screen! We all laughed about that one!
OT, Madagascar3 was really cute. Nicholas and I had a great Momma/Son date!

I was one of those ladies who went to see Magic Mike on Friday (although it was a daytime showing and not all that full). I'm sorry I did. It's not a good movie at all. Yes, there are some scenes with nice "eye candy", but they are very few and far between and aside from them the story and dialogue is sooooooo slow and bad. I was surprised how bad some of the acting was given that there are some big stars in it that are usually pretty decent actors.
(The only interesting thing about MM was that it was filmed in Tampa, where I grew up, and I happened to be down there when I saw it. So it was fun to see places I knew on screen.)

I'm so glad to hear that I'm not the only one who didn't like it. My friend and I went Friday night and by the end, we just looked at each other and shook our heads. With all of those big names, I expected a little more. Matt Bomer and Joe Magniello didn't even have that many lines. Totally didn't live up to all of the hype!!
I have a feeling the eye-candy is what drew such a large female audience. Magic Mike is not the type of movie I would care to see, but Steven Soderbergh is generally considered a good director. I'm also not a fan of Matthew McConaughey, another reason I wasn't interested.
My friend invited me to see it with her, but I really only had time for one movie this weekend. Was planning to see Brave with DD. Unfortunately, with the storm Friday night, our local theater lost power, so that too will have to wait. Maybe I'll catch Magic Mike when it comes out on DVD...
My general rule of thumb (for non-kids movies): The more hype/ads a movie has, generally, the worse that movie performs over the long haul.
I usually agree, but to be honest I hadn't even heard of Magic Mike until I saw a preview for it the Monday of the week it came out! So it wasn't "hyped up" in any way in my area.

You had the advantage of spending two weeks in Europe and avoided a lot of hype.

LOL If a movie's only "hyped" for two weeks, I can handle it. It's when movies are hyped up for a year or more (like Avengers) that I tend to hate the movie before I even see it.
