North Carolina has lost one of her favorite sons...If you are ever travelling to NC, make a stop in Mt Airy, NC. Andy's hometown. You can see the home where he lived, tour a small museum , eat a pork chop sandwich at the Snappy Lunch-yummy(restaurant mentioned in one of the shows) and visit Floyd's Barber shop. (The real Floyd was there when I visited a few years ago) You can also get a ride in the squad car. Very nice little day trip.
How sad!! This is the first I had heard about it. We took a trip and on the way home went through Mt Airy and saw the town but never did find the jail(). We did buy gas at the station just outside of town.
There is not really a jail. There is a store that has a "jail" and the "desk" that you can sit at and take pictures.
There is a statue of Andy and Opie in the town that TV Land donated.
Every year, the town has Mayberry Days as well.
I'm too young to remember him as Sheriff Andy... I remember growing up with Matlock. Either way he was a special person that is a treasure of my childhood. Go rest high, Andy!
