R-rated movies

Has anyone with kiddos under the age of 17 permitted them to see R-rated movies? How did you decide? I'm frankly shocked at how many of my 11 year old's friends have been permitted to see R-rated flicks that have gratuitous violence, sexual situations, nudity and language. And then the great thing about it - they tell all the kids who aren't allowed to see the movies all about the content.

Re: R-rated movies

My kids are 15 and 14. I think I've only allowed them to see 1 R rated movie - Rocky Horror Picture Show. Yeah, it's a little warped, but I really don't think it's much worse than Scary Movie 3, which I took my kids to see last week. Scary Movie 3 is rated 14A. But no way would I let an 11 year old watch either one of those movies!

Re: R-rated movies

No R-rated movies for the kids in our house, but I know some of my 10 yr olds friends have been allowed to see some. We allow some PG13 but only with us and usually only once we've seen it for ourselves beforehand.

Re: R-rated movies

We are just know entering this situation. I didn't realize that it was even an issue in their friend groups until last weekend (I'll post another post telling about this ).

Harley and I evaluate each movie rather than looking at the ratings. There are some PG-13 that have been okay for them and some PG that we don't let them see. I think that there was one R rated movie (Patriot) that we let them watch but only after we were sure that we knew where the most violent scenes were....shield their eyes and mute the sound. We use this website to help us figure it out. Plugged In It is great not only for movies but also has other links to let you know about media content.

We have been around teens for the past 15 years and we know that our kids are influenced by the kids that they hang out with. We can handle this. I'm just not sure how you deal with others family guidelines without your own seeming so ancient.

Re: R-rated movies

R? = no. G, PG, and some PG-13's are OK.
