| Gonna try and be on here and keep everyone updated on the races this year... it's still a little early for the competitive season, but training is underway. There was an article in my hometown's paper about training and the dangers they're already facing. Mainly: porcupines! Dogs+quills=prickly situation | Peninsula Clarion

| we don't have snow yet, dogs don't have to run on snow. they train all year long, though they really start training competitively in the fall. they hook up about 12 dogs in a team to a four wheeler in neutral and off they go....

| I am sad to report that there has been a tragic accident at the younger Seavey Kennel. I got an email from one of my summer coworkers informing me that Dallas & Jen Seavey's Lead dog, Fridge, passed away a few days ago in surgery. Apparently he got bored and found a piece of rope and chewed it up. This is never good for any animal to get into, and by the time they became aware of what was wrong it was quite serious. He died on the operating table. I don't think he was even four years old. This is a freak accident, and Dallas and Jen are devastated. Fridge was a total character, one of my favorites from the Kennel. He was stubborn and would not listen to Mitch's commands at all which is why Dallas has him. Dallas wouldn't give up on this dog and worked with him night and day and Fridge led Dallas to a sixth place finish in the Iditarod. Fridge was also one of the stars in the summer show that the Seavey's put on in downtown Anchorage. Fridge was a smart lead dog, if a bit stubborn, and had a sense of humor. He loved to turn sharp and crack the whip to see if Dallas could hang on (and was pretty proud of himself when Dallas stumbled lol) and last summer he stole the show when during a training demonstration he decided to grab the prop away and run with it. He was on his way to becoming an Iditarod champion, of that I have no doubt (his dad helped Mitch Seavey win in 2001). Fridge, buddy, you'll be missed. ![]()
