roller coasters Why is it Disney calls the roller coasters "roller coaster type rides?" That always cracks me up. To me, it gives the illusion that the ride is not actually a roller coaster, when in fact, it is.

Re: roller coasters That's a good question, and I guess they simply want to point out that there is more to their rides (theming, props, etc) then the typical roller coaster you will find in any other amusement park.

Re: roller coasters IMO, they probably call it roller coaster type because when I think of roller coasters, I think mainly of the ones that keep turning you upside down. RNRC is the only one in Disney that actually does just that.

Re: roller coasters I have to agree with CinderAbby . . . the only ride I'd really consider a roller coaster is RNRC. I, personally, don't think a coaster has to go upside down - I love the wooden ones that just go fast and have big drops - but, there's something just not there that makes me not consider them a full blown coaster. But, boy, I love those coster-type rides. (Don't care for RNRC)

Re: roller coasters I think it's the theming aspect, as Rob said. Calling Space Mountain or Big Thunder Mountain a "roller coaster" implies that it's only about the camelbacks, bunny hops and turns. At Disney, the rides are stories that just happen to put you through some serious moves. FWIW, that's my best guess. Eileen

Re: roller coasters This reminds me of a conversation I had with an Imagineer at the opening of DCA's Tower of Terror. He couldn't say the word "elevator," and if I said it, he reminded me it was an "amusement ride vehicle" (or some such). As an "elevator" it would have had to comply with a different set of laws and regulations.

Re: roller coasters [ QUOTE ] although it's no more an elevator than m:s is a space shuttle [/ QUOTE ] Well, you couldn't order one off-the-shelf from Otis, but it still has a whole lot more in common with an elevator than that gussied-up Tilt a Whirl has with a rocket launched flying brick. At least, when you think ToT is going up and down, it really is going up and down. Regarding the real shuttle... What did Woody have to say about Buzz? "That's not flying, that's falling with style!"
