Re: Any bad luck stories at WDW?

On our last trip to WDW in December, we thought our 2 kids had strep. They were on medication. Our first full day they got worse, fever coughing. We took them to a walk-in clinic and it turns out they had pnemonia (sp?). We had to change the medication and stay in for a day. It was rainy and cold. After 1/2 a day in the room at the CBR we just had to get out.

What we did to stay inside was to go over and spend the afternoon buying into the DVC! The kids played in the DVC play room. We all found it to be a good way to stay inside and kill some time.

Re: Any bad luck stories at WDW?

I don't think this necessarily counts as bad luck, since it was kind of fun, but we got stuck on the BTMRR for about 10 minutes last Sunday night. We were just rounding corner to pull back into the station to get off, when the train came to a full stop. We were stuck out there. But it wasn't really a bad thing, since it was a cool evening with a nice breeze (following 90 degree temps earlier that evening), we had fun guests all around us making jokes and having a good time, and a funny CM came out to keep us company.

On Tuesday morning at Epcot, we had worse luck. We were in the first showing of Ellen's Energy Adventure of the day. During the pre-show movie, the audio quit, and we just watched Ellen in her dream sequence, etc., and missed a lot of the set up for the rest of the ride. Then during the ride itself, just as the seat platforms were coming back into the final auditorium, the movement stopped, but the movie and audio went on. So 3 of the platforms were in the next-to-last auditorium, 2 were in the last auditorium, and ours was stuck halfway between. As I said, the movie and audio played on, so those stuck in the next-to-last room could not hear the ending of the Jeopardy game sequence.

Arlene, the CM who tried to get us through the rest of the ride, said that a convention was held there the night before, and the conventioneers were messing around with the controls. What were they doing touching the controls, was my question. But anyway, that's the worst ride we've ever had at WDW.

Re: Any bad luck stories at WDW?

After riding Splash Mountain and getting somewhat damp, I happened to walk through the area right past the ride where they spray water every few minutes and got totally drenched. It was late November and I was cold and wet for the rest of the morning.

Re: Any bad luck stories at WDW?

Let's see--- a fire on the monorail?

First let me say - we were not on the one to actually catch on fire. But we did witness it from another one. I will never forget it.

We were on the way to Epcot - one of the monorails caught fire. Thankfully, no one was hurt seriously (or so we were told) even though some climbed out the windows from fear and to breath - the smoke was horrible. Some said they saw others jump from the top - I can't say that for sure as I did not witness the jumping. I could understand why though- it was very bad. I was very upset at the time as you could hear some screams - and holding my children I realized how many parents must have had their children in their laps and no where to go...

Somehow (after a long while) we backed up to the Bus Station and were immediately sent on our way to Epcot. Well, after Illuminations - can you imagine the people standing around with no monorail in service yet? Total confusion. WDW did try to accommodate everyone as quickly and peacefully as they could. We were shuffled (Staying at POLY) on the little 'carts' they use in parking lots. Hundreds of them! I think they actually found some in storage and every available one on the property. It did take some time - the children loved it. But there were a lot of upset people. We finally arrived in our room at 2am. Needless to say we were all exhausted the next day. Thankful to be OK, and to know (?) that everyone else was.

Something we saw - when being shuffled to the POLY, we passed the Bus Station and there were, no kidding - at least 15-20 HUGE Limo's and fancy cars with men in suits everywhere. We wondered at the time how many people on that monorail signed on the dotted line for free vacations for life! I think they deserved it and more. I can still see the image and hear their fear...

I am sure over the years WDW has upgraded their Monorails and I have used them since, but I never step through the door of one that I don't get chills.

Any bad luck stories at WDW?

Yes, it's Friday the 13th when all the unspeakable mishaps come out to damper the day, ooooooooooooooooo. But I ask everyone to share their general bad luck experiences or stories they have had at Disney World, from missing the plane to having rides shut down just as you reached the front??
For me, it would be the time I was walking over the Downtown Disney jumping fountains (they are holes in the ground that shoot water straight up) just as they were turning on, and I got my evening's clothes drenched. That was about the worst luck I've ever had at WDW...Anyone else?

Re: Any bad luck stories at WDW?

We have taken 3 trips as a family and each time, something BAD happens. The first time, DH and I drove down on Fri. Mom flew kids (11 and 1) down on Sat. She forgot to wake baby on landing and you guessed it - an ear infection. Then, when driving home to Indiana, oldest DD (11) got pneumonia.

Second, kids were 13 and 3, took stepson (13) also. DD (13) got pneimonia again. She and I had to fly home early, leaving everyone else, including my mom. We landed and she was in intensive care within an hour. You can get pneumonia from a bacteria that is in your nose (and should be.)

Last time, DDs were 15, 5, and new one - 1.
DD - 15 went to Disney Institute for class. She is in wheelchair, so they were supposed to send a bus with a lift to pick her up. She did not appear at hotel when she should have and the DI staff couldn't find her. I spent 3 hours in the Poly Lobby screaming and crying "Disney lost my daughter!" She showed up then, having never been lost herself and full of stories of her trek on the Disney Transportation System. She had a blast! Needless to say, no-one else was allowed out of my sight.

Re: Any bad luck stories at WDW?

Bad luck at WDW?? Do I have a doozie!

It was in 1994, and we'd planned this trip after a winter from hell. Record cold, 56 inches of snow that didn't go away until March, baby #6 made all the kids home from school that much more stressful. We figured we would reward ourselves with a trip to Disney.

My husband's uncle had been diagnosed with liver cancer and was given a few months to live. Of course, he had been getting worse and by Easter was really pretty bad. We debated on whether to go or not and his aunt and mother both said we should. The kids were looking forward to it and besides, Uncle Al was going in a nursing home and could last a while....

We drove down to Florida in one day with a 4 month old and it took FOREVER! She cut her first tooth our first day there, which also was our anniversary....On Monday, we got the call that Uncle Al had died. We were ready to pack everyone up and go home that very day but my mother in law talked us out of it. She said that we were there for him in his life and that was what mattered the most. We asked to talk to Aunt Dot, but she wasn't feeling well, but we were told that she also felt we should stay. We did, but it really made the trip very unenjoyable. He was to be buried on Thursday. So that day we all had our own little memorial service for him, with each of us telling a story of how Uncle Al had touched our lives and made a difference to us. It was really rather nice.

We had planned on contacting the family that evening to see how everything went. Before we could, we received a call from my brother in law saying that Aunt Dot had died on Wednesday and that they were delaying Uncle Al's funeral until they could bury them together the next day. We were absolutely devestated by this news! Since they had no kids, my husband felt like they were like parents to him. Aunt Dot had kept reiterating that she did not want to live wihout Al and somehow, God was listening. They were both in their 80's. Of course, my husband was set to jump a plane and fly back to Brooklyn (where his aunt and uncle had lived), but again, his parents were adamant about us not coming back. We insisted and they kind of gave us no option. Well, needless to say, we WANTED to go home now. I felt like all this bad stuff had happened and we still had this long drive ahead of us....I kept thinking "What more could happen?"...

We ended up going to Typhoon Lagoon one of the last days there and had our really expensive Minolta SLR camera stolen out of our duffle bag. Of course we were stupid enough to keep it there rather than in a locker, but it wasn't like it was sitting right there on top. It was BURIED in all of our stuff. They took the whole bag so we didn't even get any pictures from the vacation.

Looking back, we never should have gone. Hind sight is always 20/20, isn't it?

I figure we've had enough bad luck in that one vacation to last us a while....

One of our former Passporter friends (she hasn't been on the boards since her trip last Sept--which is where I met her) broke her foot at the Backstage Pass tour at the Studios. I never did get the details from her but whatever happened it was Disney's fault and she and her husband had to cancel the remainder of their trip. -HiddenMickey
