pressed pennies Hi everyone! New to this board, very good info! I have heard bits and pieces about "pressed pennies" and can't seem to find out too much about them. What is it? Where to you get them or do you make them? Help!!!

Re: pressed pennies Welcome to Passporters. We look forward to hearing from you often. Pressed pennies come from various machines located throughout Disney and most amusement places. At a cost of two quarters and the penny to be pressed, you select from a choice of designs which is then "pressed" into your penny. An inexpensive keepsake, you can get characters, restaurants, park names, almost anything you've thought of...Disney has too. There's even a Pressed Penny book that holds 36 (I think) pennies and maybe 12 quarters. We bought one of these for our DS who's been collecting from various places for several years. Hope this helps and welcome again! Debbi

| Re: pressed pennies Pressed pennies are a relatively inexpensive souvenier. They are available at machines throughout WDW (and the world, mostly amusement parks). The machines have rollers in them. You insert $.51 and the machine takes your penny (or some machines cost $.75 and press a quarter) and presses it and imprints it with a disney design that you have picked. Most machines have several pictures to pick from. You can get them at your hotel with the name of your resort and the year and a disney picture or at several places throughout the themeparks. | Re: pressed pennies How many pressed penny designs are there? If you wanted to collect them all, how much would it set you back? Do most people stick to a theme and try and collect those or just collect them all? Maggie |

Re: pressed pennies Pressed pennies are one of the few bargain souvenirs in WDW. The book is only $ 5.00!! The machines are all over the place - once you start looking ! My kids bring their book each time we go and collect from the hotels we stay at and at some of the rides. My daughter's favorite is from Splash Mountain -she got it after she rode Splash Mtn. for the first time!

| Re: pressed pennies Now if you listen to my DH he says you're crazy for paying someone to squish your money. But if you talk to my Dkids they just love it! One year our DD was in the middle of some important courses at college and couldn't get away to go with us. My Dsons used their own allowance to purchase a book and all the pennies and quarters for her. They kept it until that Christmas and gave it to her as a gift. It was so magical! Quote:
You will find pressed penny machines everywhere! In gift shops, after rides, in resorts. It's so much fun trying to find them! My Dsons found all but one machine when they were collecting them for their sister. They walked all over the MK trying to find it. Finally they asked a CM and found it hidden in a corner of a gift shop. It was so much fun! Quote:

Re: pressed pennies This is an awesome souvenir. My Dh and I started collecting the pennies about 2 years ago, and yes -- we quickly became hooked! We sorta just "stumble" upon the machines, and get what we like at the moment. We have not stuck to a theme -- just whatever we feel like at that time. WE have not done the quarters, just the pennies. Happy collecting! Michelle

Re: pressed pennies I'm not sure about taking Canadian coins (although I'd venture to guess that they don't). As far as newer coins working better, I was under the impression that it was better to use older pennies because they are solid copper throughout, while the newer ones are filled with another metal (alluminum maybe?). The effect on a newer penny is not as nice.

Re: pressed pennies Thanks for all the info!! Here's a few more questions! Do they take Canadian pennies? Are new pennies better than old ones for pressin? Any help is appreciated!

Re: pressed pennies It seems to me like I have used older and newer coins without any problems. One thing I have noticed is that the "simpler" the design -- the better the impression. Meaning, if the design is very detailed and very intricate, often the image is much harder to see when the coin is pressed. A simple, basic design is easier to visually see on the coin. Does that make sense? Happy collecting! Michelle BTW: I have never tried to use a Canadian coin, so I am unsure if that is possible.

Re: pressed pennies Before DH and I went down in May I read all the info about the pressed pennies because I wanted to collect them. On Deb Wills site www.wdwig.com you can type in pressed pennies for search and lots of info. One tip I found helpful was how to clean the older pennies and what to keep them in while going to the parks. The little plastic container from mini M&M's holds the quarters and pennies, just stack them two quarters one penny and it holds 19 sets of them I brought along my printed out copy of the press machine locations and checked it off when I usd one. I purchased the book to hold them in at my resorts gift shop but did notice that just about every register in all shops carried them. Happy pressing BTW the book holds 36 pennies and 6 pressed quarters. With cleaning the older copper ones before going I had no problem with any design coming out clear, but the newer one had a bluish tinge that does not look very good ( IMOP)

Re: pressed pennies Sunset, first let me welcome you to the boards. We hope you'll come back often. We bought DS's book on our last trip in AUG at the gift shop outside the Pirates of the Caribbean although I suspect they can be found almost anywhere. It was $6 if memory serves. Debbi
