| An Amazing Journey: Ch. 1 -- The Journey Begins [To view the table of contents for the story of Alexander's "Amazing Journey," visit http://www.passporter.com/babya/story.htm] The Start of the Adventure It all started at a 4th of July picnic in 2001. My sister had recently given birth to her second child, Natalie, and I was holding her. I’d spent time with her before this, of course, but Natalie had just left her funny-looking-newborn-baby stage and was entering her incredibly-cute-bundle-of-joy stage. As I held her and received her sweet baby vibes, something clicked into place: it was TIME for me to try to have my own child. I wasn’t just being sentimental – my 35th birthday was fast approaching, and my biological clock had been ticking loudly for several years. But it was definitely my niece who got my butt in gear. Getting Ready for the Adventure Like many couples, Dave and I had been trying “casually” for some time… without results. I’d already been to my doctor’s who’d diagnosed me with PCOS (Poly Cystic Ovarian Syndrome), a common cause of infertility. And we knew that Dave had infertility problems as well – a chromosomal abnormality that we believed would cause a 50% miscarriage rate. So I had my work cut out for me. I stopped drinking caffeine and alcohol, made my diet healthier, took my vitamins, lost 50 pounds, and began to educate myself. Just like I had to have every Disney guide when I was planning my first trip, I bought nearly every guide on how to get pregnant. I suppose I was hoping to get pregnant on my own without medical intervention, but that didn’t happen, and back I went to the doctor. [Read the next chapter.] |
