Small business question...returned checks

I just had a personal check returned on my account from a customer. I'm going to write the customer asking for a money order, but need to know if I should include a fee. The check was for right around $80, if that matters.

I'm seriously considering not taking checks anymore. It's not like I get that many to start with, but this is my 3rd that's been returned.

When you bounce a check at stores, etc - they charge you a fee - plus I bet your bank charged you a fee - which you have a right to recover. I would charge a fee.

I know that a store doesn't get to charge you a bad check fee - unless they post they will and what it is.
That said, I'd ask for what the bank charge for you is - and then post "there will be a $___ fee for returned check" sign. And, when people pay by check - demand to see their driver's liscense - write the info on the check.

I charge a return check fee and after one returned check I don't accept checks from them anymore. I know it is very pricey but I have gotton a check reader and that works great.
