My problem with coupons

I tend to either "Stock up" on things I will get around to using later - which is not necessarily a bad thing.. if it was a good deal to begin with

OR

I get tempted to buy things I otherwise would not buy - because "well - I have a coupon!". I have yet to find a coupon to make things free....

I've got the same problem, which is why I've stopped cutting coupons for things that I probably wouldn't have bought anyway

I saw someone on an interview show once explain how people who use coupons usually spend more money, because they buy things they would otherwise not buy--- because they have a coupon. I only cut a coupon if I know it's something I would buy whether I had the coupon or not--- toothpaste, tp, papertowels, dishwasher detergent etc.

Back in the late 90s there was a coupon website that you could check items you wanted to buy, print it out, take it to the store, scan it THEN scan manufacturer coupons. I did wind up getting free picante sauce every week for a very long time. We giggle about it now, but that was back when I was stocking up for Y2K (don't ask... ) and we just finished the picante sauce in 2006. We might not have had any electricity, gas, or banking, but by golly, we could have chips and picante!!

After that, I really backed off the coupon thing and now I only use the ones that I know I need OR if it's doubled and combined with a sale to make it uber-cheap.

I cut the coupons that I will use and then trade the rest with my best friend. She then cuts the ones she wants and any left over she gives to her mom.

We keep our coupons in order of expiration. Then, we go through them, with the paper and an idea of what we NEED. We've gotten away from buying it unless we use it anyway, or were planning on trying it. Then, the coupons come in handy.

We make our shopping list out FIRST! NEVER make your list while you have your coupons in front of you!! That spells disaster!

I have, or had, the same problem as Terri. I would buy 3 of something because the coupon was for a certain amount off of 3, although I didn't need three. I started buying only the number I need of something and save this way. I mostly use coupons only if they are for one item, I really need it, it's on my list, and/or it's an incredible deal and I know I'll use the stuff quickly.
