| We have a trip planned for this September with the free dining. I have to have the trip paid off by 7-31-08 and have a little over $700 to go. I have some savings bonds that I have had since 1997-2001 that will not only pay the trip off but also leave me some spending money as well. I know I will be getting a 1099 form come tax time-my question is, would u do it if it were your trip? Would u cash them in to pay for a vacation? Thanks for your honesty...... ![]()

| Truthfully - yes. My MIL sends Abby's bounds every year for Christmas. I have yet to convince her to send the money instead so I can get better rates from our credit union. The only reason why I haven't cashed them in yet is they are in hubby's and Abby's name and Lenny needs to go to the bank with them and he keeps putting it off.

| I guess it would depend on what other options you have. I mean, if a credit card is your only other option -- or if you could pay cash but it would mean having less money for bills and other stuff this month -- then I'd do it. It'll be a hassle at tax time, but there are worse things. And it would probably have a relatively minimal effect on your tax due, right?

Just wondering if everyone thought I would be crazy to do it or not.

| My honest opinion would be to ask myself why did I get the savings bonds in the first place. Was it meant for retirement? Kids education? For a rainy day? In case of emergency - major appliance replacement or home repair? Was it a gift from somebody? If I could honestly answer myself that it wouldn't be "stealing" from my retirement or kids education or cause a problem if the house suddenly needed a new foundation or something, then I'd have less trouble cashing them in on a vacation.

| I'd cash them in, if I truly meant to replace them with something else soon. |
