| How safe are debit cards away from home? This may be silly, but I have always heard that debit cards are more suseptible to theft, fraud on vacation than cc cards. I was planning to pay off one of my cards then use it for WDW and pay it off again when we got home...but I have had companies cutting my credit amount, BAM took a zero balance card and just cancelled it ($7500 in credit gone) even though I always pay on time yadayada... So in this environment I am kinda scared to pay one off with plans for a trip b/c if they close the account.... there goes my trip money....

| DH and I have traveled all over with our debit card (only card we took to Europe because at the time we had no cc's) We've never had any problems. We use it just like a cradit card, not for pin based transactions. the only piece ofadvice...call your bank and see what the "daily limit" is...with most there is a $200 per day limit. You can request to raise this limit by explaining you will be traveling. (I think when we went to Ireland we had it raised to $600 a day). We do thi as a just in case scenario, especially if it's the only card we are travelling with. We know most of the time we won't spend more than $200 a day but just on case we had an emergency of some sort we know we won't be stuck. You can have it lowered to the "normal limit" when you return.

| My main thing w/ using a debit card like that is that the money comes directly form your checking account. Say it (actual card or just the numer) was stolen; you are out the money right away and have to wait to get it back ever how long it takes w/ the bank. If they wipe out all your cash, that could cause you a problem w/ bills, etc. If they took the money for my mortgage payment, my mortgage co isn't gonna wait for their money until the banc decides to give it back to me. W/ a CC, you can dispute the charges and not be out any cash.

| Definitely call your bank. I had to let mine know that I was going to be out of state, or they would have frozen my account. They might be able to waive the daily limits as well. If you want something new you could always open a Disney Visa JUST for the trip, earn the points while you are there and then use the points just before you leave on some souvenirs.

| My Visa debit card with Bank of America has a $3000 daily point of sale limit and a $500 daily cash limit. My Washington Mutual ( unless Chase has changed it) gold Mastercard debit card has a $3500 daily point of sale limit and a $500 daily cash limit. So if your debit card has either a Visa or Mastercard logo on it I'd bet that you have 2 limits one for purchases and the other for cash withdrawls. Definitely let your bank and/or credit card companies know you'll be traveling and the when and wheres of the travel. |

| I have used my debit card extensively when traveling and never had a problem. I sometimes use a credit card for car rentals, but that's usually it. The only limit I have is on cash withdrawals. It doesn't seem to count though if I get cash with a purchase. I did have a debit card number stolen when using it as a credit card. The bank was actually pretty quick in replenishing my account-I think it was less than forty eight hours. The biggest inconvenience was they temporarily froze that checking account to all electronic transfers and I had a few automatic withdrawals scheduled. I just had to let the bank know what was coming through and they would allow those transfers. Diane |
