book with all of the floor plans and such. I soooooo want to do this. I think it would be a really good investment for my family. Even though my son is almost 16 I still have plans to go there every 2 yrs or so. I have a step son that I am going to start taking once he is old enough to make his own desisions since his mother hates me. Any who... It will be a little while before I have the down payment what I was wondering is what is the average you guys might buy into? I was looking at either the 160 pt or the 200. Did I read right that you can bank them? So If I was to get the 160 pt and I went every 2 yrs then I would have 320 pt correct? I love the discounts you qualify for and LOVE:love the resorts you get to choose from. What would work best for us is the 1 bd vaca hm maybe get away w/the studio. I have so many questions but I can't think of them all at once. I do plan to visit them in October. Any info you might want to throw at would be greatly appreciated. This is so exciting to me. I never wanted to deal with a time share type thing but this seems a lot different.
ohhh me too!!!!!! we have the DVD and the book.....and DH and i are convinced already...its just a matter of DOING IT!!!!!
out of the question for personal reasons right now....... but whos to say that wont change in the next year or 3. DD is in love with disney....so we know it will be a good investment for us....its just actually jumping off the cliff and signing the check.....
It sounds like we could be welcoming you home soon as well! I think you're doing the right thing, visiting the DVC on your October trip - they'll be able to answer any of your questions, but in the meantime we'll do what we can to help.
When we first bought in, we went for 165 points. Simply, that was what we could afford. We took a little bit extra out on the mortgage when we moved house a couple of months earlier and used that money. If we could have afforded more, we would've bought more points, but since then, we've added on three times!
Yes, you can bank your points to save them for a big family vacation every couple of years, although you may find that the allure of Disney is too strong. We thought that's what we'd do when we became members, but instead we've ended up going every year, as we just can't keep away. It's certainly an investment that we've never regretted.
I think it would be a really good investment for my family.
As long as it's an investment in your family and not being considered as a financial investment...

I think the average is probably around 200-210, although lots of folks buy the minimum. It all depends on how often you want to go to WDW, for how long, and the type of accomodations you'll want.

Yes, or you could go once every three years and have a 480-point vacation.

The discounts are not locked in and may be changed or discontinued at any time. Don't consider them when makimg the decision.

Be sure an buy into the resort that you wouldn't mind staying at. You'll be able to book your home resort at the 11-mo window, whereas you may only book the other resorts at the 7-mo window. Thus, if you happen to try to book during a very busy time, you may end up staying at your home resort -- so be sure you love it!
Got mine Monday and Its hard not to think really hard about it. Going to visit them in Dec. and then the family needs to do a bit of budget work. I think we will buy in next year.
You'll need to pay cash or provide your own financing, and it takes longer but you can get some good deals and save a bit of money in some cases. You can also start with less than the 160 pt minimum that Disney has which can save money on dues. (less points - less maintence fees)
There's this boards sponser and about 2 other resale companies that come highly recommended.
Take your time and don't rush! There's a lot of info on this board and others - soak it up
one of my goals in life is to become a DVC member. it looks to be about 10 to 20 years off though. it wouldn't hurt to get the dvd and book, would it? i think i'm going to order them anyways and dream.
I bought in last yr after thinking about it for several years. I did not buy a home in 2005 (not for lack of trying), so I was able to make that commitment. I banked my points for 10/06 right away and used them to take my mom to Vero Beach this past March for a long weekend in a 1BR. I banked the remaining points and am using them to stay at VWL for a night or two (I'm waitlisted for that Thursday night, easily got Friday night, as it's more expensive) and to stay at the Grand Calif. Hotel in DL next February.
I made my purchase thru Disney and I have my loan payments deducted from my checking account automatically. I am planning on paying it off by year end however. I also have my dues deducted this way, prorated over the year. Oh, I paid for the contract by putting 1/3 down, 1/3 on my Disney Visa (6 mo at 0%) and the rest in the loan I mentioned. While my contract was smaller than what you would have to buy, you get the idea.
Hopefully, if the rumors are true, a DVC will be coming to DLR! You indicate that you live in Alaska, so going to DL could be an option.
You can bank one year's points into the following use year, but they expire at the end of that use year.
You can also borrow one year's points into the current use year.
Wow Thanks PP pals. THis has given me some info on things I haven't even thought of yet. I will deff. have to think a bit on it and make sure that it is a cost i can afford for the next 5-10 years. Again Thanks so much for the info.
