We are new DVC owners and will be booking our first stay at OKW in Dec of 2012. Could I get some advice or tips on which rooms offer what views etc...We will for sure want a 1 bdr. A ground level seems to be to most desireable to us. We have a seven year old. We plan on using the water taxi to Downtown Disney often. Thanks in advance for any pointers.
Old Key West is a huge resort! I would have a look at the resort map--here it is on AllEars.net: http://allears.net/acc/okwmap.jpg and decide where you'd like to be!
If you want to be close to the main building, make sure you ask for the Hospitality House booking. We just got back from a stay in Bldg 14, which was very convenient (right across the street). Our only problem was the third floor room with no elevator. If that is an issue, ask for a first floor room, though please remember that it is only a request, and not a guarantee. One other thing to note, the bus stop at the hosp. house is the last stop for the resort. While we never had to stand to go anywhere, it might be a possibility at busier times.
Our view was of the golf course, and very peaceful.
I stayed in building 11 which is across from Hospitality House. Because my DSis has hip issues we were on the first floor (she has trouble with stairs.) It was very convenient to the boat dock, but as others have said the last bus stop. We walked through the HH building area and down the side walk a little way to the first bus stop and got on the bus there some of the time when things looked busy and it made a big difference. We usually got off there as well because we were too "impatient" to wait for the bus to loop through the resort.
Thanks for the pointers. The map is really helpful. Where is Downtown Disney in regards to the map? Is there a building with views of Downtown Disney from the patio? We heard to Christmas Lights are nice from across the lake. Am I right is assuming that the recreation area is where the boat dock to Downtown Disney is? Busses aren't as much of an issue for us as we will be renting a car. Thanks again for all the help.
There is a walkway to Downtown Disney; it starts near building 55 which is located in the bottom right-hand corner of the map. The path is not lit at night, and it is not recommended to use this pathway after dark. I would estimate that the walk is about 15-20 minutes from building 55 to Downtown Disney. You pass by Saratoga Springs on the way.
As far as I am aware, there are no villas at Old Key West that have views of Downtown Disney.
You are correct that the recreation area (as well as just about all services) are located in the Hospitality House area. The HH is also where you can pick up the DVC ferry to Downtown Disney. I highly recommend taking this ferry when you visit DTD -- it is a beautiful and relaxing way to get there. Earlier this month we stayed in building 48, and that was about a 10-minute walk to the Hospitality House. If walking is an issue for you, I would highly recommend booking a room near the Hospitality House (if available).
I just wanted to add that I absolutely fell in love with OKW. In all honestly, I only booked there because we wanted a Grand Villa and OKW had the cheapest GV's (points-wise). It is a fabulous place, and we will definitely be staying there again. I hope you love it as much as we did.
Brad

We had a studio near the first bus stop. It was in the group of buildings across the street and just over the bridge from the HH. It was a great location. I didn't mind the other pick up's. We got to see the resort that way. Loved our one night there. Will stay there again on future trips.

we have stayed in a studio in building 11 and a 2bed I think was building 14 Both were right across from the HH It worked best for us to just go to Olivia's to eat every night and to hang at the pool or take water taxi. And it was easier to use the laundry next to the pool when we stayed in the studio, you don't have laundry in a studio. but worked out nice just played in the pool while that was being done.
We also stayed in a 2 bed near the pool at turtle pond I think it was. Would not of liked it if we didn't have a car. we seem to hang at the HH area alot, when not at the parks
There isn't really a DD view from OKW, but I wonder if maybe the fireworks might be visible from certain areas.
Our favorite buildings are 46 and 45, which are set off the road a bit but give you a beautiful view of the canal.
We love OKW!! Like Brad, we booked there as a last minute trip, and ended up falling in love with the resort. We have stayed there 4 times, and will probably be back there again this year!
We prefer the location around the hospitality house. Its close to the pool, resturant and boat to DTD. The bus transportation work a little easier from there too if you don't mind a short walk.
We stayed in bldg 54 way in the back. It was sooo quiet and we had a view of the golf course, and were directly across from the quiet pool and laundry. You will need a car if that far back, but very nice. The night before we checked out we returned our rental car, so we did take the bus service back and forth that last night. We had the pool and laundry to ourselves most of the time, (we did a split stay with Coronado, so I wanted to do some laundry)... We were at OKW 12/7 to 12/13/2011 in a studio.
OKW is our home resort and we stayed for the first time in November. I did request HH area but was waitlisted and never got it. In the long run we were so happy with our room, that I will always request it. We were in Bldg 19 first floor 2 bedroom villa, it was amazing! Our view from our patio was the quiet pool, and it was very quiet. We actually had the pool to ourselves twice during our stay. We did have a car, so that helped moving around the resort, but you could also walk to HH area from 19, maybe a 10 min walk. Our bus stop was Miller and it was the stop right before HH which was great, so when we didn't want to jump in the car we took any bus to HH. We are so happy with OKW, I hope you have a great trip, feel free to message me with any questions.
We stayed in building #64. We stayed on the ground floor in a 1 bedroom. We had a view of hole #7. It is close to the bus stop @ the HH & the Marina. It is the last bus stop coming & going. We started getting off at the first stop & just walking back, it wasn't too far. I really enjoyed the resort. I am hoping of maybe buying a resale so it can be my home resort.
