Only time I have been upgraded with DVC was with Disney cruise line. We tried to book a inside connecting rooms, None was available so we rolled the dice and went with Disney picking our rooms. At 1st our rooms were not connected but close. After working with DVC and DCL we were upgraded to a cat 9 from a cat 11. Which was great! and they were connected. I personally have never heard of an upgrade with DVC on property.
DCL upgrades are fairly common. Rather than let higher-priced cabins sit empty, they will upgrade guests a category or two and open-up lower class cabins for new bookings.
And I don't believe DCL differentiates between DVC members and non-members in those situations.
As for getting an upgraded DVC villa, that will not happen. The entire foundation of a timeshare is 100% occupancy nearly year-round. So many times there is simply no capacity for an upgrade.
The only time guests will get a different villa than what they have booked is if there is some maintenance issue or booking error. For instance, if they have 25 incoming members with Studio reservations but only 24 rooms available due to a plumbing leak or drywall repair, one of the groups may be upgraded in some fashion. Resorts have different ways of dealing with those situations depending upon what sort of excess room inventory is available.
But even those situations are very rare. If you ask for an upgrade at the front desk, they typical response is to tell you how many additional points will be charged for the upgrade...assuming they have anything available to begin with.

I know someone on the boards who got an upgrade through this situation, but that's the only time I've heard of it happening.
There is a slight chance if you book DVC thru Disney Travel Co. I booked BCV studio thru CRO with the 40% discount last Halloween weekend. I paid for a studio and was put in a ground floor 1BR. We were pleasantly surprised. The not so friendly CM at the front desk never told us we were put in a 1BR. When we walked into the room were very surprised.
Very unlikely, though we did get a slight upgrade last November. We booked a value studio for my parents and a savannah studio for our family. My parents checked in after us and requested a room near ours, if possible. The CM upgraded them to a standard studio to accommodate their request, which was very nice. Other than that, we've always received exactly what we booked.
Wasn't there a Passporter member who was upgraded to one of the LARGE BLT two-story units? I kind of remember someone posting pictures of the rooms and saying that they had reserved a different level.
I have to say, it can happen. It happened to us in December. We were booked at blt in a 1 bedroom lake view for 1 night and then a 2 bedroom mk for 6 nights. With probably less than a week to go, I found that our 1st night had been upgraded to the 2 bedroom mk view. When we called, the informed us that they made the change and that we would not be charged any extra points. I know it was just 1 night, but it allowed us to not have to worry about changing rooms the next day and we got an additional night in a 2 bedroom without using any extra points. So yes, I think it is possible, may be luck and not happen often, but I know it happened at least once!

That's the example I was referring to - it was a great story!
