When we were at Disney world in Jan. my father-in-law looked at the vacation club, as the week went on he began to think it wouldn't really save him that much. I'm just beginning research and putting together info for him, at his request, to prove that it's worth it. Any help or advice is so very appreciated!
Well I like to do math.
This year AKL with discount $1800
Next year Aulani w discount $3500
Next year AKL with discount $2000
Total $7300
That is 73 points at $100 a point.
I bought 100 at SSR @ $100 per point and 25 points at AKL for $120
Total for 125 points $12900
So $7300 for three years vacations
or $12900 for my DVC
The way I was going it would be two more years to equal the point price. The yearly fees are easy compared to searching for deals.
I agree - I'd start working out what your planned vacations would cost and then compare it to the amount you'd spend buying into the Disney Vacation Club. Our most recent cruise to Alaska would've cost probably around $5,000 for the two of us alone, never mind all the other vacations we've taken, so ours has more than paid for itself!

If you're comparing to Value resorts DVC absolutely WILL cost more.
If you're comparing to Moderate resorts it will take quite a long time to break even. Could be 20 years or more depending upon what sort of discount assumptions you make.
But if you're comparing to other Deluxe resorts, DVC tends to break even in less than 10 years--more if you finance and pay thousands in interest.
As Tim points out, the perceived "savings" isn't obvious when compared to stays at less costly resorts. Besides the straight numbers aspect of comparing room costs and DVC ownership, there is the consideration of the inclusion of kitchens or kitchenettes (you can save money on food costs with just the small fridge and microwave in a studio), laundry facilities, and the extra space to spread out and share family time. Some things you can't measure by a price tag.
