Back in March, we put ourselves on the waiting list to add on 100 points at the Villas at the Grand Californian. From the first time we visited there in September 2010, we knew we wanted to own there.
At the time we went on the wait list, our guide told us that it could be a very long time, particularly for a March use year. From time to time over the last 8 months, we'd get a message from our guide letting us know that we were still on the list and were slowly moving up.
When we got home from work today, DH checked the front porch and found a note on the door from Fed Ex about an attempted delivery that needed a signature and also a Fed Ex package. I was confused because I was expecting the note (I had gotten a voice mail message about it yesterday), but not a package.
He handed me the box, which was kind of heavy. I checked the return address and saw that it was from DVC. Now we were both confused, so he opened it up and started pulling out papers. I took out a document and saw the words, "Grand Californian." I looked closer and realized that this was the paperwork to purchase our points!!! I just started screaming, "We got it! We got the Grand Californian!" He didn't believe me at first until I showed him on the documents. We were jumping up and down, screaming and hugging each other in the living room.
Our kids came in to see what the commotion was about. They were happy but couldn't quite understand the level of our glee!

Yea and Congratulations!!!!! I'm hoping to stay there someday. Only been to DLR once but with all the changes lately I know a trip must be in our future!!! Would love to hear all about your first trip to the Grand Californian.
We will be making our first stay at the VGC in May, and I am so looking forward to it. I have heard so many wonderful reviews!

I have heard all about the wait lists to buy points from Disney at the VGC... I was just wondering -- is there the same scarcity of availability on the resale market?
We peeked periodically at the resale market, and while there were usually a couple of contracts available at any given time, not nearly the volume of availability you'd see for many other DVC resorts. We decided, though, that we'd rather buy direct from Disney this time to maintain maximum flexibility for how we can use our points. When we originally bought in to DVC, we did so on the resale market, but before the recent rule changes that don't allow you to use resale points for certain things.

Do you mind if I ask what you paid per point? We are also thinking about doing the same thing and want to be prepared.
I believe we paid $110/point. You can call your guide and ask them the current price. When we first started to consider this, I talked to our guide about the price, the financing, etc. and he was happy to answer all my questions without any pressure for me to take action.
