| PassPorter Wins Gold Award in NYC! We're pleased to report that our book PassPorter Disneyland Resort and Southern California Attractions won the GOLD AWARD for best travel guide during ForeWord's Book of the Year Awards Program in New York City. The silver award went to Lonely Planet's NYC (New York City) and the bronze award went to A Guide to New Zealand's Waterfalls. There were 19 finalists in this category. So now we can dress up our Disneyland guidebook in a beautiful gold award sticker on its cover! We'll also get some extra publicity for the guidebook, both during and after the book convention here in New York City! Thank you to all who helped us make this book come to life, including our contributors, peer reviewers, tip and story contributors, proofreader, and researchers. Here is our press release about the award: New Book Award for PassPorter: Brings Total to an Even Dozen PassPorter Travel Press has brought home the gold once again, winning first place in ForeWord Magazine’s 2006 Book of the Year Awards in the Travel Guide category. ForeWord, one of America’s foremost book trade journals, is distributed to more than 20,000 booksellers and librarians. The winners were announced June in a ceremony on the floor of Book Expo America, the U.S. book trade’s biggest convention, held at New York City’s Javits Convention Center. “We really weren’t expecting this at all,” gushed the book’s co-author, Jennifer Marx. “There were 19 Finalists in this category, with entries from many of America’s top travel publishers. We didn’t think we had a chance! I’d like to thank all our contributors, our panel of 15 peer reviewers, and everyone else in the PassPorter community who helped make this such a wonderful book!” While PassPorter has been honored many times in the past, this is the first award for PassPorter Disneyland Resort and Southern California Attractions (ISBN 978-158771-004-9), a first edition authored by Jennifer and Dave Marx, with contributions by Barbara Baker, Rebecca Oberg, LauraBelle Hime, and Courtney Fontana. A panel of judges composed of librarians and booksellers named 216 ForeWord winners in more than 50 categories, narrowed from nearly 1,400 entries representing the finest work from today’s vibrant independent publishing community. The winners of Gold, Silver, and Bronze awards were selected by a unique process, involving dozens of ForeWord readers--librarians and booksellers who are immersed daily in the selection and recommendation of books. Each entry was judged on criteria including originality, writing and production quality, and patron/customer interest in the subject matter. “It was a great experience, and I know our patrons will benefit from these titles,” said Mary Cooper, a librarian and one of this year’s judges. 19 books were selected as Finalists in the Travel Guide category, with the second place Silver going to Lonely Planet's New York City guidebook, Bronze to "A Guide to New Zealand Waterfalls" by Story Nature Press, and an Honorable Mention went to Moon Handbook's Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia. PassPorter’s guidebooks have garnered 12 awards and honors since the press debuted in 1999, including four Benjamin Franklin Awards from PMA, the independent book publishers association (one Gold, two Silver, and the Bill Fisher Award for Best First Book by a New Publisher), four ForeWord Magazine awards (including two Golds and one Silver), and individual awards from Independent Publisher Magazine (Gold), the Society of American Travel Writers Foundation’s Lowell Thomas Award (Silver), the North American Travel Journalists Association (First Place), and a Book Sense 76 “pick” from the American Bookseller’s Association.
