WDW: New $1 Coins began circulating at Walt Disney World (10-22-2009 05:46 PM)

New $1 Coins began circulating at Walt Disney World

On Monday, October 19, 2009, in conjunction with the U.S. Mint, Walt Disney World began circulation of the 2009 Native American dollar coins. The program is part of Disney's continued commitment to environmentality. Because the coin is recyclable and more durable than paper money, it is a better environmental choice than dollar bills.

Neat idea, though dollar coins don't seem to have the ability to catch on in this country...

the problem is the weight. It may be a nice idea but imagine having to carry all cash around in coin form, talk about added weight and stress on the body.

Aust. has had $1 coins since the early 80's and we also have $2 coins too. No dramas with weight - we also have polymer notes not paper. I guess it's what you get used to. The Aust. mint changes the face design often so collecters stash them away.

At most you would have 4 given to you as change because they still have $5 dollar bills. My kids Love dollar coins because they look like treasure! The Tooth Fairy and Easter Bunny bring them.

Interesting and, as someone who's lived with £1 coins for many years, I can't wait to see them. One thing I hate about the States is how many dollar bills you end up with - I'd rather have coins.

Yes I believe USA started trying this back in 2000. But it just hasn't caught on as of yet...And of course, in the past we have had Susan B Anthony, Eisenhower, The Peace dollar, etc. None really stand the test of time in circulation though.

Funny story -- A couple weeks ago at an interstate rest stop somewhere in Washington State, I had to push the coin return button to get my dollar back from a vending machine (because the reader wouldn't read my 2nd dollar for a coke that cost $1.50). A coin fell out and I was ticked because I had put in a dollar and only got a quarter back??? When I looked at it though, it was a $1 coin. I think it had a president on one side and the Statue of Liberty on the other side. I thought it was really cool to see $1 coins hitting the "mainstream" in the USA.

Weight really is a non-issue. We've had $1 ("loonies" because there's a loon on one side) and $2 ("toonies" because they're worth two loonies) coins for 20-ish years and the weight argument was the big resistance when they were introduced here too. How do you know that it will cause extra strain on the body? Millions (billions??) of people around the world use dollar coins or their equivalent currency and I haven't heard of any problems with extra strain on anybody's body due to carrying money. The other big argument against them in Canada was "Now that there's a $1 coin, the price of vending machine products will go up" (from 75 cents to $1, which didn't happen until years later due to good old fashioned inflation). So that also turned out to be a non-issue. It's just a matter of people being resistant to change -- we all said the same thing decades ago, but now that we have coins, I have never heard anybody say they wish we would go back to paper dollars. In fact there have been rumours of a $5 coin... wonder what we crazy Canucks would call them? Foonies? Quintoonies?

I don't "hate" how many dollar bills you end up with, but it sure makes closing the wallet difficult! I like just dumping my change in my cute little change purse.

And just to keep this post on topic : I think it's cool Disney's using $1 coins. It's not an inconvenience, and it is a lot more environmentally and economically friendly due to the much longer life span of coins and greater difficulty to counterfeit. Disney!

This would probably cause me to save more money. I don't like carrying change around and usually dump it in a jar when I get home. The main reason I don't carry coins is my keys are in one pocket, my phone in the other and coins have a tendency to fall out when I get my phone or keys out. Dropping a quarter or less was annoying but dropping dollars would add up quick.

In the other countries that use mostly coins, is there a big difference in the coin sizes. I know one of the reasons $1 coins have not caught on here is that they are way to close to the size of a quarter and it is easy to mistake them for a quarter and that gets costly if you or the person taking the money doesn't catch it. The gold ones are easier though.

They will only work in this country if they do two things:
1. Make them, like Splash Lover said, different sizes
2. Take away all paper $1 bills.

If you have no other choice, you'll use them.
I prefer using pound notes in coin and euro in coin. Easier.
