| WDW: New Monorail Safety Enhancements at Walt Disney World (12-24-2009 10:32 PM) New Monorail Safety Enhancements at Walt Disney World
In response to this summer's monorail accident, which cost a young cast member his life, Disney has made several changes to monorail operations. As reported in a statement outlining the changes by Greg Hale, Chief Safety Officer for Walt Disney Parks and Resorts, the company now requires that a coordinator be present in the Tower at the TTC at all times during monorail operations. During times when a train moves in reverse a new, dedicated observer is in place, and the driver is now required to move to the forward-facing cab when switching beams and the coordinator must monitor switch status from the Tower. Various other additions have been made to operating procedures and training. Disney is still in the process of assessing the recent Federal OSHA report on the accident, so further changes may still be in store.
