Isn't that Jersey Week? I've been the first week (last say in the parks was the Friday of Columbus Day weekend in 2003), and it wasn't too bad. Never been the second week. It was pretty darn hot (like 90 each day), though, but I think that was out of the ordinary.
I was at WDW the first week of October this year. I found the crowds to be low, except for EPCOT on the weekends. Due to the F&WF a lot of local people come out then. I'd definitely plan on scheduling your EPCOT visits for weekdays. The crowds were much lighter then.
I went at that time of year in 2002. Moderate crowds (though much more than early December (Mousefest) were.)
Hurricane warnings before the trip...but they went to the west of me. Was warm enough for shorts 24/7.
I've gone to WDW 2 times in mid October and really have loved going at that time of year! The weather is lovely and the crowds have not been bad at all! That is my favorite time of year anyway and then the parks are decorated for fall/Halloween. MNSSHP is a blast so don't miss going!

We usually go Oct 8-15, and find that the crowds are very light. We love that time of year.
[/ QUOTE ] The weekends are a little more crowded with locals, but the weekdays are good. It's one of my fave times!
Thanks so much for all of the great advice! Unfortunately, it looks like October will not work for other family members. Their kids start school about a month after mine and will only have been in a couple of weeks, so they don't want to pull them out that early in the year. Sooo, I'm going to post a new message asking for the benefits of Thanksgiving vs. the last week of June.
Well, that stinks, but Thanksgiving should be very nice. September/October was nice the last time we were there, in '05 and we are going back this Sept. 26-October 6. It is a pain to have to take the kids out of school, but we don't want to go when the crowds are heavy.
We previously went the first week of October (2003) and it was a wonderful time - great weather, low-moderate crowds, no waits more than 10 minutes - I would go back that same week again in a heartbeat.
You may be hitting Columbus Day weekend around the 9th - the crowds on the weekends will probably be larger than during the week (but I would suspect manageable).
Have fun planning!
