What exactly is a grand gathering? Does Disney do anything special for these?

it's a group of at least 8 guests with at least 80% staying on site. when you register for a grand gathering, guests staying at the same resort will most likely have rooms in close proximity.

you can also acquire special merchandise or buy into special events, available only to those with a GG (the rules apply for each event).

Grand Gatherings events include a special safari, magical fireworks cruise, and breakfast at Tony's Town Square. You can use your dining plan credits for some of these.

Grand Gatherings get their rooms closest together at the resorts (if staying together).
