The discount is between 10 and 20 percent off the room portion of your booking. If you book room only, it can be done through Disney or AAA. If you want the discount as part of a package, it must be booked through AAA. It cannot be combined with any other discount. If you book a package through AAA, you will get a Diamond card. It is good for some discounts like 10% off at World of Disney (with a minimum purchase). You also get a Diamond Parking Pass, which allows you to park very close to the gates at the parks (next to handicapped). Blackout dates do apply for the parking pass, usually around the holidays.
If you book your package during one of their Disney months, they give additional perks too. If you have a AAA Visa, there is also a 2% discount for any trip you plan through them.

For WDW, if you book a Magic Your Way Plus Dining (or higher) package w/ AAA, your party is admitted into the exclusive AAA Storytime at the MK. It's only for AAA members and a Disney face character will read you a story based on another Disney character. After, there is an opportunity for a meet and greet.
There are also member benefits for booking a Disneyland/Southern California package w/ AAA. I'm pretty sure Morning Madness is still one of them, where AAA members can get into Toon Town an hour earlier than the rest of the park guests.
At Universal Orlando Resort, AAA members receive 10% off most food, beverage and couvenier purchases on Universal property, plus discounted admission when bought ahead of time at the AAA office.
Not to mention the discounts you get with Sea World, Busch Gardens, Six Flags, etc. The cost of a basic AAA membership in your area will more than pay for iteself.
I think there's also a discount card you get with a AAA package that gets you a dining discount at Earl of Sandwich in Downtown Disney. (Originally, I thought it was a discount for showing your AAA card, but was told by an EOS CM that I needed some card from the AAA package to get the discount.)
You also get a Diamond Parking Pass, which allows you to park very close to the gates at the parks (next to handicapped). Blackout dates do apply for the parking pass, usually around the holidays.
A lot of the package perks that are advertised by AAA are things that are already included in the Disney package. However, for the room discount alone, it is worth a membership, IMHO!
I just finished paying my AAA booked Magic Your Way package yesterday (yeah!) for a stay of 7 nights at POR in May. I saved $200 on the cost of the room (the tickets, ddp were the same cost as booking with AAA). We also got the StoryTime vouchers, a $15 gift certificate to Planet Hollywood, savings on sea racers, a free round of miniature golf, and luggage tags.

That includes free dining. If you do the free dining, you don't get a AAA discount. Stinks for AAA if you ask me, because then you can book with anyone.
