Papa Mouse, thanks for bringing — The Walt Disney World Instruction Manual –yourfirstvisit.net to the board's attention!!!!

The site is different in a couple of ways--
  • It's meant for first time family visitors to WDW who do not know if they will ever return...and are not guidebook or discussion board candidates! (That said, anyone interested in WDW likely will find something to think about.) Some of what otherwise might seem odd comes from addressing this niche audience...some of what's odd is just odd!
  • It's meant to be not an encyclopedia, but rather an instruction manual--a short "how to" rather than a long "you could do this, or you could do that, or you could do this other thing, and here's the pros and cons of each" approach. The "instruction manual" metaphor helps me to design the site so that my intended niche audience can make good decisions faster.
  • The site information architecture--beginning with the home page at — The Walt Disney World Instruction Manual –yourfirstvisit.net --always begins with a firm "Do this" so that people who can and will "do this" can stop that part of their planning right there. If they don't like, or can't do, the instruction, then the next best choices are presented at the next level, with rankings of choices presented to again keep the decision making easy and fast. People can make their decision and stop here, or they can keep going to lower levels of the site where they can find the data, analysis, etc that led to the higher level recommendations and rankings.
So... — The Walt Disney World Instruction Manual –yourfirstvisit.net is an experiment...designed from the start with a target niche audience in mind, with the goal being to serve them well and fast. The information architecture then supports that goal by giving exact instructions and next best options if they can't follow the instructions!

I've had great results from communities like this picking my stuff apart and providing suggestions and support, and would welcome any thoughts or comments anyone has to share!

Thanks, Dave
