We recently booked our trip to Disney with our kids (boy/girl twins, soon will be ages 6 1/2). This is our kids first trip, but my husband and I have been there numerous times, but none since the kids were born so it has been a while.
We watched the Disney DVD together and our kids saw the kids on the video getting surprised about their Disney trip and told us that they would like the same. We would love to find a fun way to tell them. Any ideas??
Here's a few we had:
1. Get a decorated cookie saying, "We are going to Disney"
2. Do a "golden ticket" like Willie Wonka in a chocolate bar for each of them
3. Buy Disney/Mickey ears (I can only find them online and not at the stores, is this true or am I missing something?), put them in a box with a note saying we are going to Disney
None of them are "wow"ing us, and we just can't decide. I'm hoping you can tell us what you have done or other ideas you have. We are looking to keep it somewhat inexpensive - $25 max., if possible.
Hope you can help. Looking forward to reading your responses! Thanks-
Cindy
There have been a couple threads recently on surprising kids, how to do it etc... some have done scavenger hunts, some with the pizza box idea... lots of ideas, so check those out to get some great ideas.
What about not telling them at all, and surprising them once you are actually going on the trip? My wife and I are planning that, we have 59 days till we leave, and we aren't planning on telling our kids at all about the trip until they figure it out....should make it interesting, and I'm really hoping, since we are driving down, that they don't go crazy once they figure it out
One thing I will caution about though, is that your kids might not elicit the exact reaction you hope for....if you get the big reactions like on the DVD, great... but I've seen a couple of "surprise we're going to Disney" fails on YouTube, so make sure you aren't expecting huge jumps for joy. Once it sinks in they'll be pumped (and probably will be as soon as they find out) but something else to keep in mind...

I appreciate those "words of wisdom", Tim. That's so true - often you are expecting a great reaction and then don't get it. That can be disappointing after putting so much thought into it. I'll be prepared for both, and hope for the best!
We've thought about not telling them until we are about to leave for the airport, but DH and I agree we want to give them a little advance notice for their first trip.
I remember reading on PP about someone who got a huge box and filled it with helium balloons (you could tie the mickeys ears to the balloon strings...) and let the kids open it. Lots of possibilities for fun with this idea. Good luck!
for our first trip with the kids we watched the planning dvd and at the end when the kids were saying how much they wanted to go there, we told them they were and then gave them little goody bags with a t-shirt, ears, and some disney dollars that i got at the disney store.
the second year we went we had told them we couldn't afford to go 2 years in a row and that we were going to the beach instead. we woke them up the morning we were leaving and gave them goody bags again with stuff for the car ride & disney autograph books...they freaked out!!
One year, we just got little luggage tags, and on the inside (where the address would go), we had a picture of Mickey Mouse. On the picture, we wrote "See you in April!"
It was cute to see the expressions on their faces as they realized what that meant... and then erupt into screaming and jumping up and down.
It was simple, inexpensive, and they still have the luggage tags to this day (this was about 10 years ago).
We are surprising our DD age 7 with a trip this coming Sept. We are keeping it a surprise.
For the reveal, I plan to make DD breakfast for school as usual (it will be a school day and we have to leave about the same time she would for school) and I plan to use a plate I made online to serve her breakfast. So when she is done eating she will see the message.
It's a plate that has pictures of our previous trip, and the words...We are going to WDW NOW!!!! I made it on the website, SeeHere by Fugi film. It cost me $8 including the shipping.
WOW, what great idea's!!! Cindy I'm so glad you asked this because was going to do the same. We just watched video and my 6 and 7 y/o said the same thing to us!! We are trying to figure out a great way too! I want to give them a little time, even if it's just the night before ( I know they won't sleep) but my anxious son will need time to process. I like the pizza idea and the balloon idea from the video, that's a great idea with the plate for breakfast too! Will keep watching this post and will keep thinking of a great way to do this and thanks also to Tim for the heads up about the reaction, that's good to know!

I did that for my son.
I filled a bunch of helium balloons and attached the strings to a sign I'd made that told him about the trip. (Make sure to measure the height of your ceilings so the strings aren't too long. You want the sign to float about eye-level for them.)
I then enclosed it all in a GINORMOUS Disney Store bag and tied the strings of the bag closed with a simple ribbon.
