Buying my own trip insurance to cover pre-existing conditions: recommendations?
I never knew Disney's trip insurance didn't cover pre-existing conditions (and if am wrong in saying that, please correct me). Having insurance to cover our chronic health conditions flaring up is very important to me, so I looked at insuremytrip.com ... and it showed me 41 policies to compare.
Seriously?! Forty-one?!
Sure, the plane can be delayed... The hotel could burn down. But the chances are greater that DS could need to go to the hospital on vacation, and that will be the biggest factor in finding a policy.
Can anyone recommend a carrier they like?
I'm a total newbie at buying my own coverage, so I appreciate any help. I understand I need to be prepared to buy it within days of booking my trip - is this correct as well?
I called insuremytrip.com and spoke to a rep. Then picked a policy from there, it was most helpful vs looking at all those policies. They had everything narrowed down in minutes for me.

That's a great idea phoning insuremytrip! I've gotten lost trying to figure out all the different companies they have.
I don't have any pre-existing things, but I use either Blue Cross or AAA for my travel insurance. Living out of the country I must have Travel health Insurance. I found Blue Cross had better prices then AAA- and I'm both an AAA member, as well as a Blue Cross Member.
I can't help with the US, but I know over here a lot of insurance companies won't cover pre-existing medical conditions or, if they do, there's a huge surcharge. Both DH and I have pre-existing medical conditions and finally I found a company that specialises in this type of coverage. It might be worth asking if similar companies exist in the States. finding something that works for you.
I've spoken to the reps at insuremytrip to narrow down my choices & they were very helpful. Once they gave their reccommendations, I went back to their site & compared them to figure out which was best for me.
I'm not sure what state you're from but in most cases, the insurance you can add to your Disney package does cover pre-existing medical conditions. To quote from the insurance brochure "the insurer will waive the pre-existing medical condition exclusion" and goes on to give the terms (you must purchase prior to final payment, all insured parties are medically able to travel when the plan is purchased, etc).
I would double check with Disney for your specific situation but in many cases it's less expensive to purchase the Disney coverage than to find another plan that covers pre-existing.

Thanks - I'll have to give them a buzz.

Is that document online somewhere? I doubt I have my copy from my December trip...
If you search for "insurance" on the Walt Disney World website, it should take you to this link Walt Disney World Resort where you can click on the correct document for your state.
