Okay...we are headed to WDW in Oct and already have 7 day tickets on our package. Now DS is getting the extreme priviledge of going again in March of 2013. After looking at prices and doing some figuring....it will be more cost effective to get him an annual pass to cover the two trips.
So my questions are....
Does the year the pass is good for run from the date you buy it or is it based on calendar year??
And, can I wait til we get there in Oct to upgrade just DS's ticket? DH and I won't need annual passes.

I know they dont go by the cal. year! I would suggest getting your tickets on your own then you can buy DS the ticket needed and the rest of you just your 7 day pass. Not sure you can up grade only 1 ticket with your package.

They may not be able to get the tickets on their own, if the tickets are part of a package (like free dining). And you can always upgrade any ticket, Disney is happy to take your money to make it more days/WP&M/etc. You just can't downgrade tickets if you suddenly decide you don't want park hoppers.
Take the ticket anytime within the 7 days you're there to any Customer Service Kiosk in front of the parks to upgrade the ticket. Be sure your son has a photo ID. They will ask to see it. It's ok if he has used his ticket a few days- just has to do it before his last park day. Lucky him
When I upgraded my ticket to AP, one year, I forgot my photo ID so had to go do it another day.
The exception is: if he uses it in May and then tries to upgrade it in August, they won't let him do it (even non-expiring ticket.) Changes have to be made within 14 days of the first time it goes through a turnstile, and while there's at least one unused day remaining on the ticket.
I advise putting a ticket through a turnstile once before upgrading it to an AP. It just seems to work better that way.
