I've never gone in January but we go every year at the beginning of December and the crowds are very manageable. It's my favorite time of the year since the parks are decorated for the holidays.
I've been to WDW both early Dec. and Jan. and I think Jan is less crowded. However, there are always a number of rides down for refurbishment in January, no MVMCP, no Osborne Lights, no Christmas decorations. But, being from the North, I love the weather during January, and I like the size of the crowds.
January except for the MLK weekend. However, the first couple of weeks of December aren't bad (that's when we go) and you have the fun of all decorations and other holiday activities without the major Christmas week crowds. And as others have said, some attractions may be closed for refurbishment in January. However, I have gone then and still had a wonderful time. Take something warm to wear though, unless you love paying big $ for sweatshirts at the parks.

The thing I remember about early January is less crowds and more rain. But I guess the rain can happen any time. Right now we are praying for rain on the east coast of FL. If you are looking only for smaller crowds I would go in January.

Exactly this! So it's basically a choice between super low crowds plus the chance of more refurbs for some of the rides OR low crowds plus the chance to see the parks and resorts decorated for the holidays, as well as not likely as many refurbs.
So, if you've never been during the holidays, I vote for early December! (However, the only other thing to be aware of if looking at early December is Pop Warner, a cheerleading competition being held at EPSN WWoS complex. This year's dates are from November 30th - December 8th. Just note though that they tend to be at the complex during the day competing and are really only more noticeable at nights or if you're staying at (usually) All-Star Sports Resort. )
We have been the first week of January before and loved that time of year so much we are returning this January. The weather was perfect and the crowds were ridiculously low. I think the longest we waited was 20 min for Space Mountain. The rest of the lines were either walk on or less than 10 min. We were lucky enough that it reached close to 80 a few of the days and we were able to enjoy the pools!
I'd personally go for early December, because of all the Christmas events and the Christmas decorations. We've never found the parks to be that busy during that time of the year.
