Has anyone who has purchased wine at past Food and Wine Festivals encountered difficulties in bringing it home on a plane? I am guessing it should be wrapped well and placed in check-in luggage...a little worried about that! Any suggestions?

My DS and DDIL do this frequently when they travel and haven't had any problems. They just make sure to put the bottles in plastic bags (just in case) and wrap them well with clothes.
Southwest has bubble wrap bags they sell at the checkin counter to put your wine bottles in. I did this a few years ago, you might want to call your airline and ask them what you need to do. Some might take it out of the bag if it is not protected enough.
You can also buy plastic type bags you pour wine into and it eliminates the weight of the btls.-I believe its called "rumrunners" I have used then alot on Cruises-they are not detectable-less weight than in a glass btl-flatens when used-spill proof-no glass breakage-fits nicely in suitcases.
I ordered wine diapers today from Amazon! I guess they could be used for other items too like vinegars or olive oil? Guess it would depend on the size of the bottles tho.
We just brought some home two days ago. We took the bottle down and it returned home with us unconsumed/still corked. I really thought we would drink it but never got around to it. I wrapped it in a few plastic bags and then sandwiched it between layers of clothing in our one checked bag. it made it down and back just fine. Our bag was checked by TSA on the flight down, maybe it was because we also had a bottle of Skinny Girl Margaritas in there too. That bottle did not make the return trip
Have been doing this since the 80's. We pack the bottle in a Disney bag around the box, and make sure it is well padded in the center of the suitcase. Haven't had any problems.
We put any wine we bring home in a sealed bag with our dirty laundry to cushion it and make sure it's in the middle of the luggage. We've never had a problem doing it this way.
