Car Rental Prices

What is going on with car rental prices? I already have my car reserved with Priceline. Got a good deal for 11 days, a mid-size car totaling $200 (including all taxes and fees) with Hertz. But I keep checking all the websites to see what the going prices are and they are outrageous even when using coupon codes, etc. It's not like they are paying for your gas! I always thought that the closer your got to your vacation, the cheaper the rental would be. I'm glad I decided to bid on Priceline even though the thought of no cancellation or refund scared me at first.

I'm surprised - I've found some reasonably good deals over here. I've certainly not noticed car rental being any higher than a year ago from the prices I've seen from the UK end.

I know exactly what you mean. I've been going crazy looing for a good deal for 2 weeks now. I even tried priceline and my offer of $17 per day for a mid size car was rejected. I don't know what else to do.

I have been through the same thing. We rented a compact from Alamo directly in June for $108.00 total using a coupon. Then I tried using the coupon code for the upcoming trip. The same car would cost me about $250 total. What?! that's a big difference. I have tried using all the code I can get my hands on but still can't beat priceline. I bet on a economy car for $15 and was accepted by Alamo. They even tempted by into upgrading on a compact for $2 more. I have very happy with priceline.

That's one reason we've decided not to rent a car this trip, and just stick with DME

just a note on how i book a car rental , i start at about or around the 10-11 month range and keep checking 3-4 times a week . usually monday- thursday. i know it is a little bit but i have a range i pay for a mini van each year it is around $200. now car rentals usually have a 24-48 hour hold so you can cancel and rebook as many times as needed. i started at $350. in airport / $300. off/ $250 off / $200 off / right now i'm paying $209. in airport with dollar with the american axpress card discount . the reason i only check on mon- thur is that the prices from fri to sun are usually the same. check up till even the day before you leave because they can drop that last week before you go . good luck
