| Disney Magic! Or how my father caved and is now taking me to Disney :) Story Time! Growing up (I'm sure, like almost everyone), I adored Disney. The two VHS movies at my Grandmother's house were "Cinderella" and "The Rescuers Down Under". Needless to say I wore down those tapes throughout the years. Now I'm 20 about to be 21. I'm pursuing a career in film, hoping to eventually land at Disney studios. I've been dating a great guy who is going to be an animator @ Disney come September, and I've had the opportunity to meet a lot of my Disney heroes (Henry Selick, director of Nightmare Before Christmas, Eric Goldberg, animated the Genie in Aladdin and co-director of Pocahontas). So you think my Disney obsessed nature would be somewhat influenced by my upbringing? WRONG! My parents can't stand Disney! They'd tolerate the films when I was a child, but now that I'm older they mostly just poke fun at me. When I told my mother I was taking my first trip to Disney (with my boyfriend at the age of 19) she sadly shook her head and wondered aloud "Where did your father and I go wrong?" About my father. I'm almost positive he hasn't seen the entirety of any Disney film. The only character he seems to know by name is Mickey. He loathes crowds, rides, artificial locations, walking and waiting. An ideal vacation for him would include a hot beach, sleeping, and a glassful of coke and rye. I had decided to celebrate my 21st birthday in style, and invited my Aunt to come along with me to Disney World. I booked the hotel (Rented DVC points for the first time!), constructed a touring plan and grew more excited as the days passed. A week before we were set to leave, a family crisis occurred and she was unable to come. Since it was so late, no one was available. My boyfriend is busy finishing up his animation thesis film, my sister is busy having fun in Rome, my friends were tied up in school and my father laughed when I jokingly suggested he come along ("You'd probably punch Mickey and get us kicked out."). I cornered my mother and begged her to take me. I had booked to hotel! I'd pay for her flight! She told me her she couldn't take the time off work and it was impossible. I said that it was too depressing to go alone on my birthday, and gave up. Just as I raised myself to go sulk in a corner (seriously, it was devastating. I had spent the last few weeks watching all of my Disney Treasure DVDs as well as "Walt Disney Goes to the World's Fair", it's hard to say no to Walt) my father passed a scrap of paper to my mother. She read it then passed it over to me. All I saw was my name, his name, and the text "American Airlines" Needless to say the next five minutes were spent screaming, jumping, and hugging my father. I know it is impossible for anyone to fully understand how amazing this is without knowing my dad. He's not big on spontaneity, he doesn't put a lot of importance on birthdays (not to say he hasn't gotten me great gifts! but I don't think he ever really agreed with my mother letting me take school off...) and I'm pretty sure he could have died a happy man without ever setting a toe in the Magic Kingdom. So yeah, Walt Disney World with my Daddy. Can't wait! p.s. Oh, and today he ran down the stairs and asked, "Is it alright if we stay another day? It's cheaper to fly out on a Wednesday." Um, YES! |

| What a cute story! My parents were Disney scrooges too. My dad actually PAID me the admission price on our trips to Florida just so that he wouldn't have to endure it. Foolish 12 year old that I was couldn't turn down that kind of $$. Now I have my own kids and get to go act like a fool and spin the teacups as fast as I can...my loss is their gain! Have fun!
