| Belize cave tubing death I just received this today. I haven't used Carnival's tour service, but everybody uses the same river and caves. Woman Dies In Dark-Cave Tubing In Belize - DigitalJournal.com: The Power of Citizen Journalism

| That is a really sad story. My heart and prayers go out to that family. Thank you for sharing this story! I know that I assume I'll be safe on a tour offered through the cruise line but this serves as a lesson to me that that isn't always the case.

| Note to self: Don't pick this one on cruise. If you read into the article, someone posts that it's in the DARK, with sharp rocks along the walls. For an hour! No thank you! And the woman had just run a marathon. so it's not like she was out of shape and just plopped herself into an inner tube. Very sad. |

All the cruise lines have this option when you stop at Belize..we have done it twice..once on Royal Carribbean and once on NCL...to be honest?? I was not thrilled the first time..its cold..very dark and I thought it was pretty boring..you see nothing...you wear these helmuts with lights on them like a miner...there are tons of people..all just drifting around you...I lost my hubby, and my daughter who was 17 at the time was petrified...it is VERY dark, and everyone is calling out names and its like Marco Polo...you are not sure what direction the voices are coming from..BUT the ride to the caves and the area around them are quite beautiful. The second time..the group was smaller..the weather was HOT so the caves felt warmer but it was still not a great take IMO..thats too bad that woman drowned..I am unsure how this could happen...but it is dark and the water currents must be stronger now than in late winter..

| When we went in 2005, there were a total of 12 in our group, so it was a small group. We also beat the cruise line busses, so we had the river "to our selves". It isn't an hour of darkness. Actually, most of the river is open, we might have spent a total of 10 to 15 minutes in the caves, and some of them were short enough that you had light from both ends. This was in June, it was drizzling (rainforest, people!!!) but the river was pretty shallow in places. Enough that one in our party managed to put a pretty good sized rip in the seat of her swimsuit. The tour is about 1 1/2 hours of walking, with an inner tube, an hour of floating and a 30 minute commute each way.
