Red face Internet Cafe on The Magic

Does the Internet Cafe have computers that I can use or do I have to bring my own laptop? I need to stay in touch with folks at home and phone charges look outrageous. I'll be on the Western Cruise on 8/22!

Yes, they do have computers in the Internet Cafe. I don't remember exactly how many. Maybe 10 of them.

A few computers are also available in the lounge area.

On our last cruise, I checked in with home/email/bank accounts several times, and never even had to wait for a computer!

There are 5 in the internet cafe, and another 4 in the cove cafe. I think I have only had to wait once or twice. I've not taken my laptop on one cruise, and took my laptop on the other - I will be taking my laptop on our cruise in 2 weeks.

I used the Internet cafe on the Panama canal cruise last year and was very satisifed. I bought one of the packages. I don't remember which one. Never had to wait for a compute and the response time was good while surfing the web. I liked being able to check in back home, but nothing having to bring my laptop.

I am taking my netbook on my upcoming Western. Will use it in Key West, then probably use internet cafes, if I can find them, in Cozumel/Grand Cayman. Last trip, I believe it was .75/minute onboard, but I found an internet cafe in Nassau for .10 / minute

Here's what the June 13 Western Navigator states:
Quote:
INTERNET CAFE
>24 hours until 8a.m. Saturday
SURF @ SEA SPECICAL:
$0.75/min pay as you go
$0.55/min (100 min for $55)
$0.40/min (250 min for $100)
$0.30/min (500 min for $150)

WIRELESS HOTSPOTS
Log on to the internet in the comfort of your own stateroom! Wireless Internet is now available ship wide. Your Internet account may be used in both the Internet Cafe and on your wireless laptop. For assistance please visit Guest Services, Deck 3 Midship or contact the desk by dialing "0".
Others have pointed out in other threads that if you purchase a bulk, you are purchasing all of it, with no refunds. So be sure that you will use that much. Be aware of slower times to download info, so what usually takes 10 minutes (getting email, for example) may take 15-20 minutes. If you think you'll be online maybe 30 minutes/day, then that's 180 minutes (30X6, since you probably won't on the Saturdays). It'll be a judgement call as to whether you want to bump it up to 250 minutes (on spec that you'll use it) or go with 100 and then pay per use after that.

Do not use any accounts you consider "important" without having an encrypted communication. Internet cafes are notorious (even in the US) for thieves. In fact, with a netbook, you usually have the option of easily wiping the tiny drive and reloading with a new OS and software. Which I might recommend.

If you are going to use their computers I wouldn't use it for anything that's important, since many wind up with key loggers installed.

I get paid to do security. I visited 5 cafes in Cozumel on my last cruise (hm, getting paid for a cruise) and found a horrible number of security issues. The owners were genuinely surprised, so it wasn't them.

for the information. I don't use my computer ashore. In the internet cafes, I only check my email and the passporter boards, and nothing else.
