I can appreciate the need for a higher deposit. There's huge demand for Alaska, so DCL wants to discourage people from booking on spec. That helps insure that rooms are booked in a more orderly fashion and that demand-driven rates don't spike radically. There will also be fewer cancellations down the line when full payment will be due.

I am somewhat disappointed by the increase in the deposit amount as a few friends wanted to join us on our cruise but cannot swing the deposit it right now. The cost of the cruise overall wasn't an issue with them, just the $2400 deposit for two adults and two children (who will be 7 and 5 at the time of the cruise) that needed to be paid up front. Do they not offer a lower deposit amount for children? Why does it have to be the same deposit amount as the adults?

Also, and I believe this is probably far-fetched, what is the possibility of DCL offering 50% off of the deposit amount for Alaska if rebooking on the ship? As I'm already booked for the Alaskan cruise, could I book my friends a stateroom on the same cruise we're sailing and get 50% off of the deposit amount?

It'd be nice, but you're right, it's probably far fetched. I don't think DCL is going to have to offer that kind of incentive to sell out those cruises, and the same goal I already mentioned (minimizing the number of rooms booked on spec) applies even more so to onboard bookings. There's already a lot of on spec booking on board - folks needing to check their finances when they get home, etc. This wouldn't help matters.
