We got an upgrade on our last cruise. The info. was left in a message on my phone. I can't say I was overly thrilled, it was just one deck which to me was no big deal especially since we picked the stateroom we wanted. So, does anyone ever turn down an up grade?
Our upgrade was from deck 6 to 7 which I thought wasn't really anything spectacular which is why I'm curious. Maybe folks have gotten better ones than that.
Upgrades are always demand driven. While deck 6 to 7 doesn't seem like a big thing, it puts you into a more expensive category. Generally, the cruise lines are having a harder time selling those more expensive categories in today's economy, and especially when there's little real difference between those categories (as is the case when comparing Cats 6 and 5). With overall rates rising as you approach the cruise date, the best way to offer bargains is to clear space in the cheaper categories. Presuming you're in an outside, verandah stateroom, it's not easy to upgrade you to a "better" stateroom. "Better" would be either a Deluxe Family Stateroom with Verandah (Cat 4), or a suite, and those are all in far shorter supply than Cats 5 and 6. While free upgrades to Cat 4 and suite categories do happen, they're more likely to take place closer to the final payment deadline, when most cancellations come in.

We wore upgraded from a cat 4 to a suite and almost turned it down because the veranda wasn't clear in the suite (we didn't turn it down and it worked out well) and it didn't have enough beds for us , we got through that by getting a trundle bed.

Since I have never been on a cruise before, I could just be talking a lot of smack here , but I think if I were offered an upgrade when we go in Feb it would have to be something pretty spectacular. I carefully chose our cabin based on research and many of the things we are looking for - location, verandah type, feeling the least amount of movement of the ship - so I don't think I would be too willing to move unless it was for some stupendous reason.

It wasn't a free upgrade, but we were offered a really good rate on an upsell (different cruiseline) from a balcony to a mini-suite for something like $150pp. I did the math afterwards and it was something like a $1300 savings per person. But we had no guarantee where the location of the new room would be and we wanted port side, mid-ship. It's our first cruise and we want to play it safe on the motion sickness risks until we know how we do. The mini-suites come with no extra benefits over a balcony other than a little more room. Now maybe if they had been offering a full suite with the extra perks I may have spent the little bit extra but for a couple extra square feet and a slightly larger bathtub in a room we're not planning on spending a whole lot of time in? We turned it down.
