What is a "fish extender"

What are the fish extenders I have been reading about? I read someone's trip report and they said that they got rewarded with extra special treats and such. What treats might we expect with these mystical fish extenders??????

I'm sure someone can give you a better explanation, but I'll try. I believe most of the participating groups of people are on the Dis boards. Fish extenders are a type of hanging with pockets (often homemade) that people hang on the fish on the stateroom doors on the ships. People get up a group who are on the same cruise and they all make little goodies to pass out to others in the group throughout the cruise.

Its a lot of fun but depending on the cruise it can take some time to deliver your gifts. For the Baltic Cruise last summer there were about 50 staterooms participating in the Fish Extender Exchange. It took DD and I about an hour to find all the Staterooms on the list and drop off the gifts we brought. We covered every deck, from fore to aft.
The upside is that we had gifts in our FE just about every time we returned to our Stateroom. Everything from candy, packets of band aids (for blisters while touring), hand made magnets commemorating the inaugural cruise and even a Disney Lithograph from one of our fellow cruisers.
Most cruises don't have that many participants. We just had a lot of hard core DCL cruisers on the Inaugural Baltic cruise.

I'm so glad that somebody asked this question. What I neat idea. I have never before thought much about this. I guess there will be one more participant in the FE program during our October/November 2012 cruise.

A lot of people do something from their hometown/state. For example, they grow TONS of almonds where I live. I brought small packets of them. Others pick up trinkets at the dollar store.

You will find a mix of adults and kids on the exchange list. I do one item per room, except that I try to put something extra for each kids (think sugar)

We love participating in FE Exchanges! During the first one, we handed out Christmas ornaments (it was a small group...8 staterooms...and we had verified all in our group celebrated Christmas) and candy for the kiddos. The second one we participated in, I made small charms that were put on luggage tags. In addition we put in the bags candy and small items such as stickers for the kiddos. About a month or so before our cruise I came across an incredible deal on custom made pens. Well, we had 80+ people in our group (which grew to 100 or so...in 30-something staterooms!) and the minimum order of pens was only 100 (and then they ended up sending over 120 actually). Total with shipping and handling for the pens? $27...I could not pass that up!

We have received just about everything imaginable! A passport holder, candy (some specific to areas such as Canada and Georgia), state puzzle, bookmarks (both handmade Disney style and those purchased from the giver's local area), magnets (again, handmade and local ones), notepads, pens/pencils, emergency kits (with bandaids, shout, etc...which comes in handy!), candy, gum, and just about anything else you can think of!

Gifts we received from exchange with 8 staterooms participating

Gifts we received from exchange with 38 or so staterooms participating

An ornament someone made for our last exchange (there is a hidden mickey in there!)

Fish Extender (I have covered names, such as when it was Mom and me who cruised...although you will see people who have multiple FEs for every cruise)

Pens I ordered from Discount Mugs

Charms I made (the luggage tag with charm were one per stateroom...I'm thinking for our next cruise I will do a charm on key ring or something along those lines and everyone will get one)

I have another question about FE and the gifts. Thanks for all the pictures. Do you give 1 gift per stateroom or do people give a gift to every individual person that is participating?

There are no hard-and-fast rules. Usually it's per-stateroom, because there's usually one FE per stateroom. Even so, when folks know there are several kids in the room, there's often a bit extra of kid-friendly stuff. Adults aren't likely to get the same consideration.

The dark side of FEs is that sometimes folks passing by help themselves to the goodies, and maybe an over-stuffed FE may attract extra attention.
