It depends but the later it goes, usually the better your chances of an upgrade! A GTY stateroom is the one time you DON'T want to see a stateroom number next to your name.

yes but don't worry if you do! We booked a standard inside room GTY for our Med cruise in 2010 and we assigned a room right at the 90 day mark and we got a little upgrade and the boat was filled to capacity!

This year for Alaska we booked a 9c GTY so I am hoping for a nice upgrade as well pixie dust for the both of us!

When we received our cruise documents for the GTY it had no room number on it. It was our first GTY so I called the day before our cruise and asked what I should do about the luggage tags...because they had a blank for our room number and we didn't have one! She said, "i'm SO glad you called!" and gave us the number, it was a great room!!!! Mid-to-aft, verandah with no obstructions. We had no complaints! There was one suite left when we arrived at the port but the person in front of us got it. Darn! Good luck!

If I remember correctly, we got our room assignment around the 90-days-out mark. And we were upgraded from a cat. 11 to a cat. 7!

Still waiting and liking it. Hopefully the longer it goes the better room we get plus we are Gold Castaway Club Members now so I hope that also helps us.

GTY and Reshopping?

I am thinking of possibly booking another cruise. I will be on my first in May and I know your get perks for booking on-board. But I thought about booking online before the cruise and re-shop the cruise on-board. By question is that the dates I was looking at when I try and select a stateroom says GTY. Can a GTY room be canceled. If I find an offer on board that I like and that deposit applied to the new reservations and would I get all the perks that get for on-board booking. I thought GTY was non refundable but I also thought you had to pay in full at booking and when proceeding to the next step it has a deposit amount that is normal 20%.

Any help clarifying this I would appreciate.

Ok, let me see if I can answer all your questions:

1. GTY only means that they currently don't have any staterooms available in the category you want to book but they'll let you book it anyways because they expect people to cancel. Other than that, it's like any regular booking - normal deposit and rest due later. You can cancel it anytime just like any other booking you'd make.

2. I'm not sure if they can cancel any reservations for you onboard but if not, you can just cancel it once you get off the ship. Like I said, it's only the 20% deposit anyways. And then onboard you book a cruise with their special conditions (whether it be a regular ressie with a specific stateroom assignment or a GTY stateroom)

3. Onboard special offers apply to all cruisers on the cruise, as far as I know.

4. The cruise reservation desk isn't open all day but their hours are posted in the navigator. You'll have plenty of time to book your new cruise. Just don't leave it till the last day as it'll be crazy busy then.

Hope this helps a bit!

GTY can be canceled outside the 75 day mark (or 90 for Med) as the OP said, it is only in that status as they have very few rooms left in that category. GTY is very different from IGT, OGT and VGT. These last three are normally available much closer to sailing, can not be put on a courtesy hold, must be paid in full at booking and immediately enter the cancellation period. That said, I have seen savings of $500-$3500 depending on stateroom assignment.

Yes and it all depends on the cruise because we just book a 9d gty ( is this the same as a ogt?) but we did not have to pay in full. In can all get a bit confusing but usually the gist is that you guaranteed at least the catagory you have booked or higher.

A 9D (or any other category-specific) GTY is not the same as an OGT. OGT will give you anything within a broader classification - any inside, any outside w/porthole, any verandah.

Since DCL added sub-categories (a, b, c, d, e...), the notion of an "upgrade" on a GTY has gotten interesting. Buy a 9D, and even a 9C becomes an upgrade. Not quite as exciting as going from a 9 to an 8, but you're more likely to get something that's considered an upgrade this way than in the past. The basic notion with GTYs is that they sell at the price of the cheapest stateroom within a grouping - 11c for inside rooms, 9d for outside porthole rooms, etc. This brings in folks who are bargain hunting, without eroding the advertised prices of the higher categories.

Hopefully I'll help unconfuse not add to the confusion.

IGT (Inside Guaranty) - could be assigned 10A, 11A, 11B or 11C; Must be paid in full immediately and enters cancellation policy immediately; last minute room assignment possibly at port

OGT (Outside Guaranty) - could be assigned 8A, 8B, 8C, 8D, 9A or 9C; Must be paid in full immediately and enters cancellation policy immediately; last minute room assignment possibly at port

VGT (Balcony Guaranty) - could be assigned 4A, 4B, 4C, 4D, 5A, 5B, 5C, 5D, 5E, 6A, 6B, or 7A; Must be paid in full immediately and enters cancellation policy immediately; last minute room assignment possibly at port

GTY - is offered in all room categories (except concierge). This is done when your room category has only a few rooms available. There is no better chance of upgrade with this than with a specific room number. Room assignments are generally 20-40 days prior to the cruise. GTY rooms can be put on courtesy holds, require deposit only (unless a last minute booking) and full standard cancellation policies {recently on occasion, the rooms shows GTY and when the confirmation emails 2 minutes later it has a room number. Not a lot of consistency to when these are assigned)
