We are 7 weeks away from our cruise and it looks like there are alot of rooms still left. I have no way of knowing how many but most of the categories are still available so I assume they have a bunch. I wonder how likely it is to get a free upgrade at check in? Btw this is the Dream June 1st double castaway cay cruise. And the prices have not gone down, they are over $1000 more for our room category then what we paid.
We are on the June 2nd Fantasy, and was able to get a lower cost upgrade. If I would have booked the same room at booking it was 500.00 more. i only paid 200.00 for upgrade to ocean view vs inside.
Frequently cruise lines will look at inventory and say "wow, there's a lot of demand for category 10, but not much for category 8". So they'll offer low price upgrade options to category 9 customers and then offer upgrades to cat 10 pax to cat 9. The people who are offered the upgrade options is usually based on what you paid for your cabin. The higher your original fare, the higher the likelihood you'll get an offer.
But if a decent priced upgrade appeals to you, call (or have your agent call) about a week after final. Lately I've been hearing of a lot of people (across the entire travel industry) cancelling at final. Fortunately, it hasn't hit me.
I am in a similar situation with the Alaska cruise. However, DCL did come out with a VTY rate that cost the same as my ocean view at the 75 day mark
We couldn't cancel and lose deposit, excursions, Palo spa etc, not worth it. The ship is only half full (or so it seems as every category is still available). Hopefully there may be some good upgrade deals at port. We called and the best they could offer us over the phone was $900 to a navigator's. Sorry that's not a deal that's rack rate.
Are there IGT,OGT, or VGT staterooms yet? That is one way of knowing if they are not selling very well, or the ship is not packed. That is Disney's way of lowering the prices to try to fill the rooms.

We are on the 5/19 Fantasy. There are still IGT and VGT rooms available. I originally booked a 7A aft, but DH might have trouble getting around from the aft cabin. When we sailed on the Dream we had a cat 5 midship.
I have asked my TA to try and find us a midship verandah at a decent price and she is going to get back to me. It we can't change before 5/19 I'll try and upgrade at the port but we are taking DCL transfers from the resorts, so by 1:30PM we might be out of luck. The ship is hugh, I guess I was trying to save some $$$ by booking a 7A.
