Trying to convince co-worker to give Disney a try. They just sailed to Carribbean for the first time last month on Carnival and her DH would like to try Alaska for their anniversary.
They weren't very pleased with some aspects of Carnival so I'm telling them they need to give Disney a shot. Her DH's concern is too many little ones on Disney. My thinking is that even though its Disney that there are not too many little ones on Alaska trips, am I somewhat right? I would think that it's more suited for older kids (tween and up) to adults.
Also, when would be a good time for Alaska? I'm thinking Fall but I could totally be off.
Please feel free to offer any input.
Thanks.
I'd recommend Royal Caribbean for Alaska cruises. Their ships have so much glass that it's better for viewing. We've done 3 RCL Alaska cruises. One day, we were eating in the dining room and a pod of humpback whales was swimming pretty close alongside the ship; we could see them quite clearly from our table. Very cool
If they're looking for an Alaskan cruise without too many kids, I'd recommend one of the last cruises of the season. We were on the last cruise of the season last year and saw very few kids on board.
I guess the issue isn't "not too many children" but rather, will the children be underfoot? Due to Disney's kids clubs, tweens club, and teens club, kids are generally occupied, and the clubs are open from 9:00am to midnight. I've experienced more kids underfoot on Carnival, because Carnival's kids-only options are not nearly as good.
PLUS, Disney's adults-only areas are great, and exceed those on other lines (spa, adult pool - not that it'll be used on the Alaska itinerary - Cove Cafe adjacent to the pool, adult entertainment district...). So, the kids have their places, the adults have theirs.
Select late seating for dinner, and there will be far fewer kids at meals, too.
If this isn't good enough, Holland America carries far fewer kids, and they do Alaska very well.

The Alaska cruise season doesn't extend too far into the fall -typically sail dates are from May until early September. If they want fewer kids on board, I would suggest they look at May and September dates. However, I agree with Dave. The quality and availability of kids programs and the superb adult only areas on the Disney ships make this less of an issue.
We cruised Alaska in early August and found that we experienced very good weather at that time. We rarely needed our coats at all -mostly just on Tracy Arm day. The temperatures and "mosquito season" are also factors to consider when choosing dates to sail.
Thanks everyone, I will relay the information. Yeah, I know Disney's kids clubs are awesome and we love the adult areas when we cruise. There's a "mosquito season", OMG I never knew that, something to consider!
We did the AK cruise July of 2011 and really enjoyed it. What I really liked about the crowd on board was the number of "multi" generational families on board. Grandparents bringing their grandkids etc. All the kids seemed to be having a great time and weren't "running wild". I think it's a different atmosphere than a warmer destination cruise.
I'm on the Wonder in Alaska right now and am really enjoying it. There are lots of kids on board and from what I've heard, the kids club counselors are doing a lot of special crafts and units about Alaska. They go on some of the excursions with the kids and families, too, so they're enjoying themselves, but really getting a different experience from a Caribbean cruise.
Laurie are you posting from land because it would've taken you 25 minutes and $50 to post that if you were on-board, lol! Hope you're having a great one! Grab a chair on deck 4 and a blanket when you float through Tracy Arm it's a great spot!

LOL! I splurged on the big internet package on the first day, thinking I'd continue with my live daily reports. Took too long to load to photobucket, though, so I have a lot of minutes left to read and respond to posts! Surprisingly, my signal strength has been pretty good in the cabin and pages haven't taken long to load.
