I'd call the different rental agencies. I though the rates were fine tuned down to pick up and return times. I've been charged a 1/2 day here and there for returning a car past a specific time.
IF you book the extra time in advance, the agency may give you an hourly overtime rate (you may have to speak to a human being). However, in my experience, four overtime hours is close to the cost of an extra day.

At Hertz they told me that you can get charged hourly up to 3 hours past the 24 hour mark, once you pass 3 hours then you get charged an extra day. You should call your rental companie and ask them.
