Panama Canal Cruise - PIFed, but now decisions as to what port excursions?
The good news, we just PIFed for our December PC cruise. Now the hard stuff, what (if any) port excursions to do. Three of the four stops (Cabo/Puerto Vallerta/Cartegenia) don't exactly have good reputations. We're hesitating about should we even get off the ships in those ports.
IMO if you don't plan on getting off the ship then there is no point in going on the cruise. Activities on board are pretty limited unless you like playing bingo or shuffle board or sitting on the deck by the pool watching ppl. None of those things interest me.
Getting off the boat and going on excursions, IMO, is the whole point of the cruise.
The cruise lines wouldn't take their boats to seedy crime ridden locations where their guests might get mugged or hurt.

They cut Acapulco out of the port list, and I'm sure they've done everything to make sure that the excursions are as safe as possilbe. I don't agree at all that the whole point of a cruise is the excursions OR that there's nothing to do on board except people-watching and shuffleboard. I went on the Panama cruise in 2008 and a 15-night cruise with mostly sea-days was not enough time to do everything I wanted to do. My Navigator was filled every day with activities I wanted to do. On such a long cruise, I would get off at every port, though. A brief stop on a cruise isn't enough to really do justice to any place, but you can get a feel for a place and the tours can be fun and informative. On my cruise I just shopped and had lunch with friends in Cabo, took a tour at the other stops. You'll have such a good time. I LOVED this cruise!
Well, for my wife and I, this trip is all about the trip through the canal, not the various other ports, and for me, its about two weeks away from work and relaxing, not so much about the various other stops on the cruise. I do agree, it's nice to get the feel for a different place/culture, so some of the city or other tours might interest us, but we're not beach folks, so going to all the different beaches and swimming isn't our cup of tea. When we did the West Carib cruise on the Fantasy we did the Chacchoben ruins and had a good time.
So, which tours are worth it, and which are a waste of time?

I really liked the Puerto Vallarta tour that included the trip to the tequila factory. I don't drink, but it was still interesting to see how it's made, and it was a nice family enterprise in a tiny town. I enjoyed the drive through the farmlands to get there, too.
The day spent going through the Canal was one of the best days of my life. Definitely the highlight.
