Nassau Visit

My DH has been checking some other Disney boards and noted that several people posting trip reports there said is was not worth it to get off the ship and visit Nassau. Their opinion is that there really wasn't much to do for 4 or 5 hours and they wished they had stayed on the ship. What do some of you all think who have been on a cruise? We will be traveling in June of 2006 on the Wonder.

Re: Nassau Visit

I have been to Nassau on another cruise line. It was not a planned stop on our itinary but one the cruiseline made in place of another stop we were suppossed to have. While it was not my favorite port of call, our cruise line did offer some interesting tours. My DH and I enjoyed walking around the town. The Atlantis resort is also a fun place to visit if it is a tour offered by Disney or you can get there on your own. Do try and get off the ship even if you do so for an hour or so. If anything, you might enjoy looking in some of the stores.

Re: Nassau Visit

Well, as I say on page 276 of the new PassPorter Field Guide to the DCL - I'm really glad we got off in Nassau! We didn't on our first cruise because we had heard things like you have been hearing. But on our second cruise we decided to do some shopping. Everything was in easy walking distance and the Straw Market was really fun! Perfect the polite but firm, "No thank you!" and you'll be fine. We got some really great stuff (tip: Look UP! A lot of the "good stuff" is hung up high in the stalls) and had a lot of fun. Make sure to attend the shopping presentation for great tips and a shopping guide. If you show the guide at a number of different stores you get free stuff or great deals! At one store, we got these Majorcan Pearl earrings for $8. They are HUGE! I wear them all the time.

Re: Nassau Visit

It's been 22 years since I went to Nassau to walk around, but, I will be there on Friday! Grace and I are taking the tour (in the air conditioned van, no less), and are then heading to the Pirate Museum before we head back to the ship.

It's a jump ball. In 2003 we swam with the Dolphins, so we only saw Nassau from the cab on the way to Paradise Island and went back to the ship by 2:30. We enjoyed that part very much, but I wish we had more "deck time" to lay around the pool or go to the spa or something.

You are allowed off the ship by 9:30 am, I think, and could be back on the ship for lunch and the rest of the afternoon could be spent exploring the ship.

Re: Nassau Visit

Thanks, Belle! I'm definitely buying the book as soon as we get back from our WDW trip. So in two weeks I'll probably full of more questions! Plus tons of excitement!

Re: Nassau Visit

When we did the 4 day DD and I got off the ship for about an hour. We just wandered around the (mainly) jewellry shops and finished off at the Straw market.
This was ideal for us, as we felt we had had a taste of Nassau, without losing valuable ship time!

Re: Nassau Visit

I think it's worth it to get off & wander around for at least a little while. We wandered in & out of some of the stores & had a nice walk. We got back on the ship in mid-afternoon ate & relaxed.

Re: Nassau Visit

We've been on 2 Carnival cruises to Nassau and I really didn't like having to dodge the hawkers first thing off the ship but when we got to Atlantis(rented moped 1st trip, taxi second trip) I really enjoyed it. We hung out on a beach(next to Atlantis)the taxi driver took us there and then went to Atlantis and explored. We were able to look at an outdoor aquarium(awesome) and at the pool(it was after 5 and the pool was closed so we weren't stopped from going into this area. Our previous trip, when the pool was open, we weren't allowed through)We also had an ice cream at a soda shop(can't remember the name.) We are planning a Disney Cruise and was wondering if you stayed on the ship while your docked, are there shows or any activites going on?

Re: Nassau Visit

We went to Nassau this past Sept with DCL..it wasn't one of our scheduled stops but due to the hurricanes (Frances, Ivan and Jeanne) or cruise was all redirected. But anyway...we did get off and had a GREAT time. We ended up getting a day room at Atlantis Hotel and Casino...and had a BLAST on the waterslides. We also enjoyed going through the straw market...although after we spend so much time at Atlantis...we had to somewhat rush through the market...that and I wanted to hurry over to the Hard Rock Cafe...for a drink...and souviner glass. But again..it is worth at least getting off for a short time. You can also take a taxi to a beach and make the day a beach day....there are plenty of nice beaches on Nassau to go to. Just bewarned the locals will ask you if you want your hair braded ALOT...we simply said no-thanks...and they let it be...but there's always another one asking around the corner...overall they (the locals) were all very nice and polite....we never ran into any of the rude, pushy locals that you hear so much about.

Re: Nassau Visit

Well we just returned this week from the Disney Wonder. The best part of the trip was meeting my friend Joan that I met on this post forum. We did do Nassau and did not plan it very well. We were afraid of not getting to our scheduled dolphin swim in time and we got there really early and waited. So we spent much of day in waiting. The dolphin encounter was absolutely my kids dream. If you have a child that loves dolphins it is well worth the encounter. We also visited Atlantis adn would love to go back and stay there. The town itself I thought was really dirty and did not like it at all. My 8yr DD was freaked out by people coming up to her about hair braiding. It really depends on what your family likes and enjoys. If your a shopper and like shopping for bargains this is the place. The new edition book says that the cab fair is 12.00 for a couple and then 3.00 after that but the rate is 4.00 per person no matter age. When you get a cab don't let them put more than 8 people in a group. Its way too crowed for the van.
