I did the first day of week 2 today! 90 seconds running! Lol to all you with your 8 miles! Someday, I hope to be able to run one mile without stopping. I love this thread! Makes me see light at the end of the tunnel. I am also surprised at how much I am enjoying running outside versus the treadmill. We have been having such beautiful weather!
I don't do 8 miles of straight running. I do Jeff Galloway's run/walk/run method! I recently moved up to run 2 minutes/walk 1 minute but I may have to drop back to doing run 1 minute/walk 1 minute. My knee has been hurting a lot lately and my doctor thinks I may have some cartilage damage from a twist I did to it in a 10K race I did in the spring. I'll know for sure after my MRI next month. I plan to do my 5 miler race (8K) race at the end of the month in run 1 minute/walk 1 minute intervals.
Kelli--I just wanted to encourage you with this: race miles are really different than training miles. I know that while you're doing your long runs, you're thinking, "How will I ever go 13.1 miles?!" because I've been there. But when you're on a course with lots of other people, the miles seem to go by faster. The excitement of a race, and adrenaline you're feeling really makes a difference. I remember how terrified I was before my first half, but you've done your training, and you're going to do great!
Thanks Beth! I really need to keep that in mind. I need to stay positive!
Congrats to the rest of you-loved the couch to 5k and couldn't believe it when I made the 25min. That first 5k is what kept me going(and knowing Disney was in my future)!
Kelli, I agree with Beth. It seems that after every tri I think to myself, "did they measure the run correctly?" While you are in the race the miles will go by faster than training miles, even if you aren't running faster. I think it is just the energy that other racers give off and the excitment of the race.
I did well with 25 minutes straight today, but had awful cramps in my calves afterwards. Anyone have any tips for that? It felt a little better after stretching, but they are still sore.

Try getting a pair of compression sleeves for your legs. You were them on your lower legs between your knees and ankles. I wear them when I run and sometimes in the afternoon after I run or even the next day if it was a race. I know my mom will sometimes wear hers the next day after a race if it was a particularly hard race. I had a really hard week last week where I was running all over the place for school and having to wear heels a lot and my legs would cramp up over night so I would put my compression sleeves on in the evenings when I got home from school and my legs would be fine the next morning. They help keep the blood pumping up through your legs. I got mine from Zensah.com. Here is a link to the compression sleeve page on their website Running Compression Leg Sleeves | Zensah
Planning on doing 8 miles in the morning....gotta get my head wrapped around that number. It is as much a mental thing with me as it is physical.
Running is a mental sport! I always break it down into smaller parts while running, and it seems to help. If this helps any, try to think of it in hours? I just tell myself, " 2 hours, then I'm done" (or what-have-you). It doesn't seem as daunting as 10 miles does!! And of course, I break that down into the smaller sections like: 10 more minutes, then a 5 minute walking break, 10 minutes running, 5 minutes walking, etc, etc.... I probably look really stupid when I run because I'm always doing math in my head!!

Thanks for the encouragement! I finished my 8 miles this morning in 1 hour 38 minutes....I am pokey but I at least will finish! I, also, break it down into smaller increments. At this point I am walking 1 minute, running 3 or 4 minutes. We have our route marked off in quarters so I am always counting how many little white dots I have left after I hit the turn around mark. Whatever makes it work!
I've even seen a shirt that said, "Running is a mental sport, and we're all insane!"
I did a half yesterday, my legs felt strong throughout, thanks to my trainer. However, since it was a trail run and I train on flat sidewalks, I was feeling pretty tired by the end. When I got to mile 11, I just wanted to walk the rest, but I knew I'd be disappointed in myself if I didn't continue doing my intervals. I finished with my third best half, which made me so happy, because it was 5 miles of flat and 8 of hilly trails!

Way to go Beth!! I am impressed with anyone running a whole marathon. Don't ever see that in my future but I admire those that do. Seem to have strained my right leg a little with the work out yesterday so I am icing it today. Hope it is better tomorrow so I can get my 5 miles in! Happy training!!

Thanks, JuliB; but don't be too impressed just yet! It was a half marathon yesterday. My full is coming up in January!

Rosanna and Luv2laff--someday soon, you're going to look back and be completely amazed at how far you've come! I remember my Couch to 5K days. Keep plugging away!
JuliB--oh, I've had those days. Good for you, for getting out there and walking. I've been hard pressed to get my mileage in during the past few weeks. There's always tomorrow!
Yes, yes, and yes! I agree with every single thing you've said!
I'm working on my run plan for the next 2 yrs (to take up to my 50th birthday).
I've been running less than 2 yrs now, but took it slow: Learn to run clinic, then 5k clinic (3 times), a 16k clinic, and hilly 20k clinic, and now a 21.5 (HALF) clinic.
Each one truly prepared me for the goal run, and while nervous, I knew I was totally prepared.
Every so often someone will bring up our first days in Learn to Run, and remember how our goal there was 3k yet we didn't know if we could even make it to running 3minutes straight! We've decided we're all miracles!

Reason: typo
I did well with 25 minutes straight today, but had awful cramps in my calves afterwards. Anyone have any tips for that? It felt a little better after stretching, but they are still sore.
I also had cramps in my calves. I was told to drink plenty of fluids and eat bananas for the potassium. Seems to have done the trick.
So I finished my very first 5K in 33:07 yesterday! I was hoping for less than 40 minutes, so I am really happy with that. I walked about a 1/4 mile in the middle and ran the rest.
