Excellent news! I'm glad your first week was a success. I also second the above advice to stretch. I read once (somewhere in my searching for tips for running) to stretch often. Meaning more than just before and after exercising. Have you ever noticed how a dog (or maybe cats too, I've never owned one) always stretch out after getting up? All day long? Well, they really do. It helps them, and can help humans too.

As I get higher and higher in my mileage for training for the Half marathons I run, I find it very helpful to stretch not only before and especially after a run/workout, but also in the evening shortly before going to bed. Or whenever else you can! Just do it slowly and carefully so you don't pull anything!

Good luck, and keep it up!

ETA, check out this site: www.mapmyrun.com and you can plot a course around your Disney hotel - or at home! Or AllEars has some info too: http://allears.net/btp/running.htm for anyone who is interested!

Rosanna- don't freak about the 20 minute run- it took me 2 times to do it. I just decided to have no expectations the second time I tried, to walk if I needed to, and I did it! Keep up your confidence, you'll do great!

Just want to say that is awesome! To all of you who have started a plan, it is a great way to get going. It worked well for me. So excited for you! It does get easier on the breathing and you will have good and bad days. Just don't get discouraged. I have had to cut a run short a few times as it was just not working for me but usually the next time was always better. And yes, stretch a lot & most definitely after. I am guilty of not doing it enough. Have FUN! Keep posting!

I will second the mapmyrun website. I have the app for my iPhone too, and it uses GPS to track my route and then tells me my speed and distance. It works great!

It's like running with a fabulously supportive bbff (British Best Friend Forever). I've heard that some folks hate the music, but I kind of like it. It's nothing I know, so I can't sing along. That would hamper my breathing! Good luck and happy running!
the second run of week 5 is TWENTY MINUTES? how is that building up to anything???

ok sorry. i'm doing the NHS podcast too (and i LOVE it--and the music. minus the one rap song during week 4.) but after 'completing' week 4 last week i have to do it over--because i wasn't able to fully do all of the running (i'd occasionally walk lest i die!) so week five is definitely beyond me. good to know!

First, great job to everyone who is keeping up with the program. I went out again today... but I'm having issues with a bad sinus infection that just won't go away - and it seems to really mess up my breathing. I can't seem to get in sync the way i want to... I can't breathe through my nose very well and end up breathing through my mouth too long... But the important thing is that I'm sticking to it the best I can I suppose... so, here's to another week!!

Ugh... running/exercising while sick is no fun! I usually still push through it as best I can, but just to get the miles in. If it means it takes longer cuz I'm walking more, then so be it. Take it easy and rest a day or two if you need to! You'll be surprised at how resilient your body is and should be able to jump right back in on schedule. Good luck, and get better soon!!!

Definitely rest and drink lots of fluids but if you decide to go out..try menthol cough drops. I tried some sugar free menthol honey lemon cough drops when I was coming down with something and was losing my voice as well. The combination of the menthol and the cool air opened up those nasal passages very well. I concentrated on keeping it in my mouth for a long time without biting it and honestly I liked it enough that for my half I brought a couple of peppermints to suck on. It also seemed to help a bit with mouth dryness as well. Feel better!

Oh and I will add that I did end up taking almost a week off of running. I just couldn't try and push through anymore. So listen to your body!

I just did my first session today. It was great! Now he said to take a day between when getting started...but as its a holiday week I was thinking of going tomorrow and Wednesday as well. If I'm feeling ok is that a good idea or should I spread it out a bit? I just don't know if I'll make it to the gym this weekend (but I will try).

Thanks

okay i've been a stranger... i am sad to say that my sinus infection pretty much took over my life and I have only been doing what i have to each day to get by... finally got an antibiotic, the pain has mostly subsided - just dealing with the whole emptying ordeal now - everything finally draining out of my head.

was really upset about being stuck on the couch and not out running- but i guess i just have to count it as a setback and get back up and try again...

so, hoping to get back to the program tomorrow... sadly i'll prob need to start back at the beginning but hopefully i can do a little better...

Thanks for the encouragement! I am happy to say that although I failed at the 25 minutes the first time, I kept at it and was able to do it yesterday. Felt great!
