So thanks to summer heat and things happening, Ive fallen into a running slump. I missed out on my long run this weekend as I was out of state and the gym in the hotel was at a cool 80 degrees and no fans.....needless to say, I didnt do much running.
On top of this, the place that I usually do my running has a male red winged blackbird that is VERY territoral in one section of the running path and swoops down on you while you try to run by him. Now I dont want to run there in fear of getting attacked! I dont want to do roads if I can avoid it, I dont trust other drivers! And the treadmill is okay, but then when I go out and do a race, I feel like I get my butt kicked cuz Im not prepared for the outside world of heat, humidity, hills...and now birds!
What do you do to snap yourself out of it? Im thinking a big ol sundae (kitchen sink anyone?) might do the trick but I know thats not the healthy way to go!

I've been running on the school track down the street. There's no sidewalks around here, so I don't feel comfortable in the street with the cars/dogs. I usually go down around 7 or 7:30 at night, when it's cooled off a bit. This week has been great as there hasn't been any humidity. Plus with other people on the track, it helps to motivate me!
If I am in a slump I get some new songs on my iPod and buy a running/fitness magazine.
That usually works, if not I try to at least get some quick walks in and I always fall back to running. I figure at least I am still moving.

I love the school track idea ! It has a beginning and an end and sometimes that helps with the monotony, you can challenge yourself to a set number of laps. Great idea !!
I don't have sidewalks either, live on a country road though so it is not so bad. However, the main roads are a bit scary in the winter with my longer runs. But I cannot do the treadmill for more than 3 and I hate gyms. I have been trying to get out early in the am to beat the heat. For about a week and a half I had a slump big time. But I printed my training plan and put it up where I can see it often and someone at work is always asking if I have run. That has really helped. Accountability. But it sounds like your biggest issue is where. I say you run outside early AM or in the evening, bring a tennis racket and swing at the blackbird ;-) OK-just kidding. The track sounds like a great idea or maybe you can invest in a treadmill for your home? Although I despise running on them, it does serve a purpose when push comes to shove. I have a marathon runner friend who did a lot of training for a marathon once on a treadmill, he said when he hit the road he felt like he was able to go much faster. Although I too worry about drivers, I keep my music only in one ear so I can hear them approach and stay close to the grass on the curves. Good luck! Oh and watch some Disney marathon videos on youtube..that will get you going!
I hear ya. My true motivation had always been having a race coming up. And if that's not enough, say its just a 5K, I try to make a new PR. And if that's not enough, or an option, then I say "just get the miles in, even if I have to walk it." Once I get going (finally, geeez) odds are I end up running at least half of it. I know it's hard sometimes, especially with crazy schedules and such. And crazy birds! But I hope you can find your running mojo soon!

Hi everyone! Well I did do some running yesterday (started Jeff's half program) and today I did some cross training so Im feeling like the slump has passed!
I might try some running outside later in the day, but I have this fear of dogs coming out of bushes and biting my legs off....Im sure I would get better (sorry old Monty Python Joke) . But seriously I think thats probably the main reason I dont want to run outside in neighborhoods is for this reason...now I can add birds to this list too! Maybe that tennis racket is needed after all!!
Happy running...walking...or ralking everyone!!
