"Are you asleep yet?"

The first timers: Me Paula 30
DH Steve 31
DD Brittany 7
Staying off site at Ramada Fountain Park for 2 weeks Aug 23rd Sept 6th.

Pre trip report:

Wednesday 22nd August 2001.

No trouble getting Brittany up this morning, she has been so difficult to wake for
these past few days because she has been getting to sleep very late due to the
excitement. Bless.
Had many last minute jobs to be doing this morning, ie. banking, bills to be paid, last
minute packing. Nonetheless, everything ticking over nicely by teatime. Steve had
arrived home early from work and after having a bath etc., we were on our way to
KFC for our obligatory last meal before holiday. This has become a tradition of ours
for the past few years, saves on washing up at least!
(I have not mentioned that Brittany had been told we were not leaving until 5:30pm
tomorrow, she would never go to bed if I had told her we were getting in the taxi at
5:30 AM!) By the time our meal was finished and the dog had been walked it was
getting on for 8:00 and she was absolutely squealing. Everything she said was spoken
in a very high pitched rush of breathlessness. Well, I could not get her to bed. She
would go up and come down and up and down until I could stand it no more. Steve
said we should tell her the truth........
He sat her on his knee and told her we had to be up at 4:00am cos taxi was coming
for 5:30! Oh my gosh, you would never believe the reaction. More high pitched
squeals of delight, followed closely by “ you pair of liars,” lots of giggles, “you lied to
me”. “I can’t believe you said we had another day at home to go”, and so on. BUT
SHE WOULD NOT GO TO SLEEP. In the end we all went up to bed together - cue
the Disney advert “ are you asleep yet?” and you get the picture. She finally
slumbered off somewhere around 1:00am. Steve was right behind her, snoring away
loudly, leaving me tossing and turning and unpacking and repacking our suitcases
mentally instead of the usual straying sheep. 2:30am, still repacking suitcases in head.
3:00am I have had enough now, and have decided I may as well be downstairs and
sorting out the luggage, than in bed and fretting. So up I get. Kettle is on and I am
very tired but excitement has reached the highest point in my stomach and the feeling
can not be pushed down anymore. Hand luggage is all sorted, Steve will have to bring
cases down - too heavy for me.
4:00am I decide to try to rouse the troops, camcorder in hand, I know Steve is going
to be none too pleased with me for this, but at least it will get him out of bed!!
5:05am and we are all sitting in the living room, wide awake, excited and waiting for
the call from the taxi company to say that the driver is on his way. Then it came, will
be here in 20 mins. Frantic is not the word. I am a dreadful flyer, and I felt sick to my
stomach, but happily excited too. Check the valiums are in my handbag. Check again.
The taxi arrives and will pull away for the 1 hour drive to Manchester. Brittany is in a
very calm quiet state at the moment and I am just waiting for it to begin again.
he taxi driver relates details of his own holidayto WDW 8 years ago, and all I can
think about now is the flight. We do not fly until 9:30, and I am not looking forward
to sitting at the airport watching take offs and landings for 3 hours. Never mind, least
there’s a bit of retail therapy to be done.
We arrive at the airport bang on 6:30am, and checkin straight way, no hitches, just a
heck of a lot of security questions to be answered. Straight through to the cafe for
some more much needed caffeine, and some breakfast for Brittany, we both can not
face anything to eat, and now is a good time to be taking a valium. Check time, if no
relief from anxiety, take another 1 hour before due to take off.
Straight through passport control and on to the shops. Steve is only ever interested in
the cigarettes, so we make a purchase here and just meander around at leisure. Before
we know it is 8:45 and we need to be at gate 26. **** blimey, the time has gone very
quick, can’t believe it. So we sit in the smoking section, puffing our heads off while
Brittany sits at the kid station colouring in.he call comes through for our flight to
begin preboarding and I had better take another pill...... hope these work, or else....
